How to add a new string to the Crowdin en-gb source?

I admit I am a bit uneducated about this newfangled method of translating textpacks. We used to have a simple database table back in the RPC days ;)

Nevertheless, I bravely wanted to add a new string introduced by this commit to the language files.

I naively hit the ‘+’ button on the Crowdin page for the en-gb file to add the new string there. Unfortunately, Crowdin told me that adding source strings is not available for this file format.

OTOH, pull requests to the textpacks repo are declined.

How do new strings actually see the light of day?

That’s odd. I thought the method was to log into CrowdIn and add strings that way, then we just periodically initiate an npm script to pull changes into the textpack repo and distribute them to core. I’ll ping Phil and see if anything’s changed.

Sorry for the hassle.

Phil’s away for a few days but he’ll be back Tuesday and will be able to get you up and running then if that’s okay.

Great! I’ll patiently wait and happily learn the new way of speaking Txp any time when the chance occurs…

Anecdotally, I understand that the CrowdIn < – > repo dance is a somewhat manual affair, and is dependent on Phil’s copy-‘n-paste fu when resources permit.

It would be sensible to consider documenting the process somewhere and extend the pool of people who can do this, so the bus factor is improved.

Re: How to add a new string to the Crowdin en-gb source?

Forgot to circle back on this, sorry.

So the process is indeed a bit manual. Syncing from Crowdin required some API shenanigans so we instead do it like this:

  1. Add strings to the textpack or pophelp repos in the en-* language(s).
  2. Phil (or someone) then uploads them to CrowdIn so other translators can play.
  3. Once translated, those strings somehow get pulled back down into the textpack/pophelp repos. Not sure how.
  4. We periodically run an npm script to pull the contents from there into the main core repo.

So the sticking point here seems to be that the repos don’t accept PRs or you don’t have commit access to them. One of us should be able to fix that by poking around in the myriad settings.

Re: How to add a new string to the Crowdin en-gb source?

Hi Robert. I uploaded the latest en.ini file to Crowdin and that will bring in translations of the extra strings.

In future (applies to all the devs) please add any additional strings in the en.ini files in the dedicated Textpack GitHub Repo and I will monitor and sync to Crowdin. Sorry for the slow response this time.

Thanks!

I am caught in an ♾️loop, this time triggered by my intention to add the strings introduced by commit 867b977. Crowdin still won’t let me, because those strings don’t meet their file format requirements.

I won’t give in. Promised.
