Google Domains

Has Google gotten into domain hosting?
Someone wanted some help with their site and when i checked with netcraft it reported:
Domain registrar: google.com
Nameserver organisation: whois.google.com

what fresh hell is this!

They have been doing that for a while. Probably all nicely coated in the your-typical-sugary-big-brother language that we know and love from G.

It could also be a smaller operation using Google as a registrar- a lot of smaller places will just resell stuff from bigger places and manage it, agency-style.

I realise you didn’t ask, but check out Porkbun if you want a good registrar without the BS. If you’re EU, check out Gandi.

I should clarify – there may be an intermediary using Google as the ultimate registrar, usually in some reseller arrangement with domains managed via an API. Plenty of SaaS vendors do it, they offer domain registrations as a convenience and just resell a proper registrar’s services.

Porkbun looks very interesting. i used to use gandi at one time.
