Thanks, I’ve tried this and also using a private window, but still seeing the message. If I move back to the v4.8.8.-dev branch the messages goes away.

Clear your browser cache and that should fix it.

Try to load the site in the Tor browser. it clears all data by default.

Thanks all. I’ve tried a totally new browser, in private mode, but the banner still persists.

Re: Feedback: Textpattern CMS 4.8.8 released

All very strange. I updated two sites this morning. I got the ‘New version is installed’ message, I refreshed to clear the cache and the message went away. Things to check:

  • Does High Diagnostics show anything interesting/unexpected?
  • What does your database show in the txp_prefs table under the ‘version’ key name?
  • Have all files definitely been uploaded and replaced?

Thanks Stef! That’s the issue – it’s saying version 4.9.0-dev, I guess I’ve switched to this branch at some point (probably accidentally) and then switched back. I’ve changed this to 4.8.8 and the notice is gone.

Re: Feedback: Textpattern CMS 4.8.8 released

Ah yeah, that’ll be it. Once a database has been “upgraded” there’s no easy way for us to figure out that’s happened if you downgrade, so it requires manual tomfoolery like you did to alter the version string.

If you’ve gone to dev and rolled back by just tweaking the version string, you may find a bunch of other things go sideways, so keep an eye out. You might be alright for now, because we’ve not done much database wrangling yet (beyond a few prefs tweaks) but some changes in 4.9.0 aren’t going to be backwards compatible with 4.8.x.

Re: Feedback: Textpattern CMS 4.8.8 released

Moved three sites to 4.8.8 today. One high traffic with thousands of pages, one a low traffic single pager, one with a dozen or so pages.

All went well, and two of the sites now running PHP 8.1.

Thank you to the developers.

Re: Feedback: Textpattern CMS 4.8.8 released

Upgraded two TxP-powered websites smoothly, thanks gods — our devs! Both sites from Textpattern v4.8.7, MySQL 5.5.5 (MariaDB 10.1.48), PHP still 8.0.3, HTTP server: Hiawatha 10.12, OS: Linux 4.9 (Debian 9.13). One site with oui_player and tru_tags, another with no plugins.

Re: Feedback: Textpattern CMS 4.8.8 released

Upon a fresh install of 4.8.8 i get a config.php, which lacks a

?>

at the end of it. Just noticed.

Like this

<?php
$txpcfg['db'] = 'database';
$txpcfg['user'] = 'user';
$txpcfg['pass'] = 'password';
$txpcfg['host'] = 'localhost';
$txpcfg['table_prefix'] = '';
$txpcfg['txpath'] = '/home/root/www/domain.com/textpattern';
$txpcfg['dbcharset'] = 'utf8mb4';
// For more customization options, please consult config-dist.php file.

Re: Feedback: Textpattern CMS 4.8.8 released

That’s by design. We changed it a while back so that if you add extra stuff to config.php it’s easier to document: we can just say “add it to the end of your config.php file” :)

Officially, 4.8.8 only covers PHP to version 8.1. Unofficially, I have had it working mostly OK with PHP 8.2.

Textpattern 4.9.0 is scheduled for release after PHP 8.5.0 is released. Realistically, this means December 2025 (in an ideal situation) if there are no huge changes in the final stages of release candidates.

At this time, the General Availability release of PHP 8.5.0 is scheduled for November 20 2025. This date is two days after the release of the code on Github. I typically collect & compile the release code on Tuesday, and the release is made public two days later on Thursday. At this time, there is 1 further Release Candidate scheduled, then we’re ready for General Availability on November 20 2025.

At this time, there are no further scheduled Beta releases for Textpattern 4.9.0. At this time, there are no plans for a Release Candidate – we are targeting a General Availability release.

PHP 8.1 isn’t going to disappear from hosting organisations any time soon. I say that with some personal demons since I do not like running publicly-visible software on unsupported libraries. This forum itself is affected by the end of support for PHP 8.1 as the forum software will not run properly on PHP 8.2 or later.
