Re: my Traveller site, with some updates mentioned

Almost done, about 140 planets left out of 637 to do, the big star cluster I talked myself into mapping. I named it Breloss.

Hopefully I’ll start adding the maps and articles to my site in the next two weeks.

Re: my Traveller site, with some updates mentioned

1555 planets and universal world profiles done on October 4, 2018. 76 left to go in the star cluster. I find as I go through my spreadsheet tracking all of this I have several areas planned, maps uploaded, etc., but no articles yet.

Re: my Traveller site, with some updates mentioned

My Traveller site was wiped out of articles during the intrusion into my web host; however, I have started placing articles back up with maps. The navigation menus are up to date as to what is currently available. Just 2400 articles to go.

Thanks for stopping by.

Re: my Traveller site, with some updates mentioned

I definatelly have backups, it is repopulating all those articles that is painful. Probably take me a year at my current pace of doing things.

Re: my Traveller site, with some updates mentioned

My Traveller site articles are all fixed now, the categories aren’t, but I’m redoing them anyway.

But aren’t the articles in the DB?

Re: my Traveller site, with some updates mentioned

Yes. However, myphpadmin saved them one way. Textpattern expected a different way upon upload into myphpadmin.

I figured out what the difference was, and uploaded the sql file. All articles are back. I’m redoing the categories, so I didn’t edit that part.

Re: my Traveller site, with some updates mentioned

Well, turns out not all articles were backed up. I now make certain I backup the db even if I just correct one typo. I loaded the best backup sql db I could find, and now I notice it was incomplete. Got a couple of questions form a web site I mentioned my Traveller site on.

Working on it as I have time, I am checking every article. A bit tedious, but I’m getting there.

As far as I remember you’re a Mac user: Do you know BBEdit for comparing 2 open text windows? There’s a free version, too, not so full blown, but still with the capability to compare. The comparison window, called from the Text menu, allows to transfer any single difference in both directions.

Re: my Traveller site, with some updates mentioned

Nope, I’m a Windows 10 user. I tried their ‘almost like BBEdit’ and most don’t seem to be editors of any sort.

I have EditPadLite 8. I can have two windows there.

I presume you mean compare the sql downloads and then upload the compared/edited one.

Good thinking uli!

The makers of the git program Tower list several windows diff/merge tools on this page. If you are planning on doing a diff/merge on very large database files, be aware that huge files can tax those kinds of programs considerably.

If it’s only articles you need to repopulate, and if your successive backups are incrementally numbered, you might be able to isolate just the “textpattern” table in your start .sql file and then construct an INSERT statement to add the missing articles in bulk by copying together the details from your successive backups. If this is obvious, my apologies. If not, what you need to look for is the part starting:

INSERT INTO `textpattern` (`ID`, … … … `uid`, `feed_time`)
VALUES
	(1,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … ),
	(2,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … ),
…
	(99,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … );

etc. Remove the semi-colon at the end and replace it with a comma, then at the end paste each batch of new rows from your successive newer database backups making sure that each new entry starts with a unique Textpattern ID,. When you run out of entries, end with a semi-colon. For example to continue the example above:

…
	(99,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … ),
	(100,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … ),
…
	(123,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … ),
	(124,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … ),
…
	(167,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … ),
	(168,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … ),
…
	(221,'2011-09-10 16:19:29',NULL, … );

Save this as an .sql file, then make a backup of your intact database just to be on the safe side, and then import your long INSERT statement into that database. If you did everything properly, a whole batch of new articles is added at the end.

Another tool that might help, but is unfortunately not very cheap, is Easy Data Transform which is available for Mac and Windows. It gives you a whole host of chainable operations you can do with tabular data. It doesn’t work directly with sql unfortunately but will work with CSV files. You can export sql to csv on a per-table basis. The stack operation adds new lines to the bottom of a table and you can dedupe rows should you have two the same, and reorder if necessary.
