Tip: .var. in a font-name considered harmful
A font-name that includes the character sequence .var.
can result in a error 500
response (Internal Server Error), it possibly triggers some mod-security
or similar filter.
I use the variable font Inter-roman.var.woff2
(name provided by the foundry in the download package) on some sites and some servers where not-so-happy. Changing the .
to -
or similar separators solves the problem.
Hopefully this saves someone from spending some debugging and hair-pulling time.

Ah, the old double file extension thing. Very strange to see a font using it.
If it’s the same Inter (Roman, variable) as I’m thinking of, the Github download does not have the double extension issue, for what it’s worth:
github.com/rsms/inter/releases/download/v3.19/Inter-3.19.zip
Edit: I was wrong, it does have the double extension file.

You are absolutely right. I’d missed that.

Thank you for finding. I hadn’t had time yet to check their GH issues.
