Re: smd_at_work: click to put your site in maintenance mode

Are you using Safari in incognito mode, or something like that? Browsers sometimes don’t share credentials across tabs.

Just FWIW: maintenance mode and browser‘ private / icognito mode

Safari: open admin side in a private window, set the smd_at_work to ON.
  1. open a new tab in the same window (it will be ”private” ) and type the url of the public side: 503 unavailable
  2. click on the link to the public side from the top of admin page: a new tab opens with the public side fully accessible that link is specified as target=_blank and rel=noopener (although the latter does not matter).

Firefox: repeat same steps

  1. in new tab in the private window, the public site loads normally (full display) but do that in a new window then the public side returns 503 unavailable
  2. click on the link in the admin tab: same as Safari

I leave the Chromium based browsers as an exercise for others.

Thanks for testing. Interesting that Safari honours the login credentials if the action is launched from a logged-in session. That’s neat, and the only real difference from Firefox insofar as once you’re logged into a session there, you are “logged in” to that window regardless of how you reach the destination URL.

Can’t for the life of me think why Kjeld’s experience differs.

I tried a delete and reinstall of smd_at_work out of sheer desperation. Still gives me the error message… 😳

I know it sounds obvious, but it’s definitely not cacheing the 503 response is it? Perhaps not even locally but at some intermediary? (Cloudflare, et al)

Does a force-refresh work? Does it work if you toggle the browser inspector on and tell it to not use the cache?

Am not using Cloudfare, and constantly empty cache and refresh the page.

By toggle the browser inspector on and tell it to not use the cache, do you mean the small Block icon with a line through which says “Ignore the resource cache when loading resources” in the top right corner next to the trash icon?

Nothing happens when I click it.

Yes. But if you’ve cleared cache it won’t make any difference. This is baffling.

In Safari the caching is disabled by default when the webinspector is open.

And yes, on the Network tab. when the icon is black/white the caching is disabled, when blue, caching is respected.

Option-command R twice also fetches resources completely from the server.

Have been refreshing like a maniac…

Always do so actually. The marks on my option and command keys have almost faded off.

There’s also Tor if you want to be absolutely sure of no caching between sessions.

I get the same result in Tor.

:-) we share the same keyboard look!

Your situation is puzzling. Is there anything in the server configuration that could mess this up? Something in .htaccess maybe ?

I installed smd_at_work on another site running Textpattern v4.6.2 and it worked fine.

As soon as I can make some time, I will do a new installation of the latest txp version, install smd_at_work and see what happens.
