I like that idea too, not just because it’s more than “just text” but also because it can be accessed via a browser (element web app) as well as via apps, making it easier for new users to get started.

If a Web interface is planned, why not choose the simple and mature XMPP open protocol? For an example Movim — FLOSS PHP Web frontend for XMPP plus WebSocket microblogging on decentralized Jabber servers with chat rooms, voice & video-conferences. //movim.eu/

It will be Matrix, not IRC. It’s in the list of ‘stuff to do’, realistically September or October this year as the days start to get shorter in the northern hemisphere and my day job is less…all-encompassing!
