Re: Email notifications fail ?

Reviving again…

Since yesterday, again no forum notifications in my inbox. The last one was a notification for the post by user “planeth” in the ‘Alpha & beta testers request: Textpattern IRC^H Matrix server’ thread. Timestamp 2021-04-07 22:26:53 JST.

Where is that emoji for a solar powered submarine when you need it ?

Re: Email notifications fail ?

Ugh. OK, I’ll have a look. Please hold.

Edit: 30+ emails in the queue with (Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=example.com type=MX: Host not found, try again) error. Nothing changed in the last week or more, so not sure what’s happening there. Leave it with me, expect emails to start flowing soon.

Re: Email notifications fail ?

Fixed. This happened (out of nowhere): askubuntu.com/questions/1292650/resolv-conf-no-dns-servers-known

I’ve tweaked settings and updated my build guide to pre-emptively set known-good DNS, which should hopefully avoid this in future.

OK, the six or so email I could expect arrived nicely, together. Thanks for keeping up with that.

Great news, thanks for letting me know. There were ~35 emails all processed at the same time, the queue is now back to zero. It’s not an error I’ve encountered before, but I’m going through our servers now to check they’re OK.

… and the notification for that post arrived instantly. We are probably good for a while :–)

Let’s hope so! The way our servers work is they use themselves for DNS lookups, and the upstream DNS defaults to (and is operated by) DigitalOcean. For whatever reason, that upstream seemed to break and the resolution went south.

From here, I’ve hard-coded IPv4 and IPv6 for Cloudflare and Quad9 instead of relying on provider DNS:

$ cat /etc/systemd/resolved.conf
[Resolve]
DNS=1.1.1.1 9.9.9.9 2606:4700:4700::1111 2620:fe::fe

…and so unless the hot mess intricacies of systemd breaks it, we’ve got it sorted it from here.
