I have to say that I am well behind the evolution of CSS. The article prompted me to check CSS Variables, CSS grid, and Modern JS which I feel that will need to implement at some point.

FYI Textpattern 4.9-dev branch has already dropped IE completely – for most of the reasons outlined in that article.

Another FYI – we’re nearly at the point that our Textpattern network sites (forum, .com, docs, and so on) can drop the web server encryption ciphers for Internet Explorer support, too. Sometime in the next 12 to 18 months I plan to upgrade us from Mozilla TLS v4.0 (Modern) spec to v5.something (Modern).

Edit: the other holdback is old versions of Safari. Internet Explorer and ye olde Safari(e) use the TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384 cipher to communicate with our servers, as it’s the least insecure (?!) cipher for compatibility.

This is what we’re running on our latest server build (green = OK, orange = weak):

Every client that connects to our servers needs to use TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3, along with a cipher. Our servers are set to offer a known-safe set of ciphers, with the weak ciphers used for older clients who need access from older systems. The weak ciphers are used for Internet Explorer and Safari, plus some exotic browsers that insist on using weak crypto.

Slowly and surely we’re phasing out support, without any adverse effects.

PSA: for security’s sake, please help this effort by using a sensible browser as your daily driver – your webmaster / webmistress and ops teams will appreciate it!

Yeah, OK. Depending on whom you ask, the share for IE (11 ? only) is about 3.38% in Japan (Statcounter). Caniuse (source ?) has it at ~ 1.5% for the same country. Nobody know for sure who those users are or where it comes from.

Note also that until recently IE still had better support for some accessibility features than Edge, old and the newish traitor-edition (High Contrast themes, but also other AT tools).
