alternatives to google drive

I’m looking for alternatives to google drive or Dropbox for a collaborative project (a book) that I am working on. I found the following but I admittedly do not have any experience with them:

The project involves a shared folder with subfolders and all the editing is done off line and re-uploaded as dated .docs, so no editing tools are needed. Regarding space, as always, more is better.

If you don’t need the collision detection facilities that those services offer because you have a date/user-based file naming scheme, you could simply use a folder on your own domain for that. Space is only limited by your server plan.

Tools like Transmit, Expandrive or Mountain Duck, Cloudmounter and probably others too allow you to mount a remove folder as local volume on the Mac Finder. Many of those tools are available for Windows and Linux too. There may be a one-time cost involved for the tool but thereafter you can re-use it for as many projects as you like.

If you want a self-hosted fully-fledged online solution, there’s NextCloud. You may need to check your server requirements but they are not out of this world. Here are some instructions for Digitalocean (sign up with the Txp affiliate link, or one from Pete). webdock also have cost-efficient and speedy servers in the EU.

I can vouch for Mega.nz. Cryptographically secure shareable folders and content, with 50GB of space on the free plan.

Thanks so much guys. I used to have Dropbox and Mega but deleted them as I did not trust them any more. I think that sftp is a really nice idea and I’ll mention it to my co-editor and publishers. They are all computer savvy so I hope that they will accept.
