Tools to convert images to .webp or .avif ?

At the moment I have given XNconvert a try (a bit of an odd and ugly duckling, but works reasonably well), other people seem to use Squoosh. Recently I tried WebPonize but that is either broken or fails miserably. Are there any other suggestions, preferably not online tools ?

(and not electron based. ça va de soi)

For Windows, I am using the light yet very powerful IrfanVew with RIOT dll plugin (File: Save for Web instead of Save As). Sometimes also FileOptimizer is useful for many other file formats.

I’m fairly confident the venerable Graphic Converter for macOS will support AVIF in the near future. Already supports WebP (even supports animated WebP, which I didn’t even know was a thing).

Seeing Vienuolis mention Irfanview, I thought of Graphic Converter too. Downloading it now to check out WebP support. Avif, being basically the same as HEIC should probably be relatively easy to add.

For converting to the Avif format, Kornelsky has written a CLI utility: cavif. Available for Linux/macOS/Windows platforms. I have not yet tested it, though.

Graphic Converter does a good job (AFAICT) at converting an image, with good speed. A big plus point is good AppleScript support, so I could plausibly easily convert the scripts I use with Acorn to use with GC.
(cons, GC is a little pricey ~€34.95 / ¥4.900-)

I also noticed that XnCovert is available via the Mac App Store (there are may webp converters in the App Store, quality unknown).

That Cavif-rs utility does a decent job, AFAICT. On macOS it takes all OS supported formats as input (lossless ones !: TIFF, .heic). The results (given similar settings) are similar to images converted with Squoosh. Batch converting 12 600×900px TIFF images took about 3 minutes.

PS. Squoosh has a command-line utility as well (npm based workflow).
