Alternative code storage provisioners
Thought I’d make a place for alternative code cellars, in case you’re so inclined. If you have knowledge of others. Notably the lesser known and esoteric adventures, do share.
So far there is Codeberg.

I do like how Microsoft have grown an open-source conscience. Sure, it’s probably ultimately self-serving to steer people to paid products and services eventually by enticing newbies to their platform and then hit them with subscriptions to Azure or whatever when they’re hooked, but it’s still a refreshing and welcome change to the closed-source mindset of old.

I have to admit that when I first read the news of github been sold to MS, I felt that it was the beginning of the end for the platform. Admittedly this is an excellent move, and it echoes Apple’s active shift towards anti-commodification. There is still a lot of work to be done for real privacy, and against monopolies. One step at a time, I guess.

Yeah I was very skeptical at first. But, aside from the ridiculous main/master stunt, the transition has been largely positive.

Glad to hear it. But let’s keep focused on the alternatives. :)

Does self-hosted stuff count? There are heaps of lists of self-hosted alternatives, including running your own Git server, or the countless other versioning tools out there.

Well, there’s GitLab obviously. Either self-hosted or using their hosted platform.

I suspect that’s along the lines of what Sourcehut is from.
Anyway, I think I can do a search in that case. This thread has probably run its course already.
You may now discuss Github and its new dark mode option.

Although dated, there’s a bunch available on this roundup. Some paid, some not.
