File Naming Conventions

Curious on what others think are proper file naming conventions for images, documents pdf etc .

I tried to tell my colleagues the file names should along the lines of : “picture-of-me-at-beach.jpg” or png. gif, pdf, or doc…etc and not to use for example “This is photo of me on my bike.png” or “Theatre, interior 1960 North.jpg”

I say we should have no spaces in file names because having spaces that renders the name with odd characters for example:

F&A%20Costs.html
my%20PDF%20file%23name.pdf

They say having spaces etc is crucial for google indexing. I say that is nonsense. Google searches the meta data much more correctly.

your thoughts?

is there an authoritative link to point to?
