Development notes on Textpattern 4.9.0
This thread aims to inform, explain and aid understanding of changes intended for Textpattern’s 4.9 release.
When a feature is added, or functionality changes, or something is fixed, it is typically listed in the HISTORY.txt
file that accompanies each release. This thread provides advance notice of these changes, in a very similar way to the well-received Dev news thread, but specifically focused on one release.
Textpattern 4.9.0 is likely to be a ‘big’ release. Subsequent patch releases (i.e. 4.9.1, 4.9.2 etc) will have their own notification / discussion thread.

Re: Development notes on Textpattern 4.9.0
An important headline change in Textpattern 4.9.0 will be a change to the minimum system requirements:
Textpattern 4.9.0 will require a minimum of PHP 5.6.
PHP 5.6 is the last release series for PHP 5. Vendor support for it has long since ended (i.e. 31 Dec 2018), so it’s considered end-of-life in that respect. Most hosting organisations should be offering PHP 7 in some form by now. If your host is not offering PHP 7 as a supported library, you should consider moving to another host.
PHP 7 is the current major release. PHP 8 will be released later this year. Textpattern is most performant on PHP 7, and since it has ongoing support it is considered more secure. Early alpha testing on PHP 8 shows further performance increases. We are tracking PHP 8 development and hope to have Textpattern ready for use with PHP 8.0.0 at or near to release time.
