Music organiser and player for mac

Hi all,
Can somebody recommend a preferably open source alternative to itunes? I used to use Nightingale but it does not work with the Catalina OS.

I’m looking for something that

  • organises the music similarly to itunes
  • plays mp3, flac, aiff, wav, etc files
  • allows for custom playlists
  • Does the cooking and dishes

Not tried it, but Musique might fit the bill.

Otherwise, maybe this list of ugliness might hold a gem?

I downloaded Musique but it connects online for full functionality which I find very intrusive.

quod libet looks interesting but does anyone have any experience with it, or others?

Doesn’t iTunes also do that to get cover art and lyrics and stuff?

Might be able to turn it off if you don’t care about that stuff. Not tried any of them, although it was on my list of things to do because iTunes is tits. I’ve only got it installed because it came with the OS and is the only thing I’ve found that reliably creates playlists on the iPod Shuffles we still have.

I’ve got Kodi on my Amazon FireStick – does music cataloging as well as video (although I’ve not really used it). Might be worth a look, interface is quick slick.

  • Swinsian – Not free but more like iTunes
  • VLC – Free, plays well-nigh everything, does playlists, etc. but library management is basic.

Re: Music organiser and player for mac

Actually, yeah, Kodi is a good shout. I’ve got that installed already for my movie server. Maybe I should see if it’ll catalog my iTunes/music directory and go from there. The iPod thing might still need work.

We use VLC on mobile devices to stream movies from the server and it’s ace. As you say, jakob, the library facilities are basic though.

Opt-in. I mean, sure, if you’re already iCloud-ed up the yin yang then it’s not a huge leap, but it’s definitely opt-in for artwork.

Thank for reminder – I had planned to look at it once. Also echoing others about Kodi (although, if I remember correctly, it was way more focussed on songs than __albums. I never use song views).

I am not really interested in most of them as Music.app né iTunes does all what I need pretty well on macOS 10.15 and iOS 13. And as I make quite extensive use of Apple Music (the service) it is easy choice.

Re: Music organiser and player for mac

All,
thanks so much for your recommendations! As usually, I’m favouring open source, as they have a longer life span than commercial ones. I’ve been using nightingale since 2012 and I only had to give it up because of Catalina. Kodi is around since 2002 so it might be a safe bet.

!!! A quick search directed me to this tutorial. It’s a start, I’ll have to next see how I can make a custom playlist.

Indeed, but it also reads your meta-data, and replaces tracks, to the ones in their library. I have some recordings I would not want replaced. This is the main reason, I was using nightingale!

Re: Music organiser and player for mac

Just in case anybody else may be interested in this, I found Kodi to be restrictive, especially its convoluted way of creating custom playlists. I’m now looking into jellyfin which is the open source alternative to emby.
