When we serve /file_download/N/filename links I think (you’d have to check on a desktop via the web inspector Network panel) that it does a redirect to the real file. Can’t remember if it does, or if it silently reads the file contents in the background after incrementing the download counter and serves it directly. If it does a redirect, maybe the mobile search engine isn’t honouring that.
Do you have the luxury of a web inspector panel on your smartphone so you can maybe see what Google’s querying and whether it’s getting through?

I tried to use Safari’s web developer on my MBP to invest the page in Safari on my iPhone, but it doesn’t work. I’m not the only one after consulting the web … :(
