Author prefixes and registration (themes and plugins)

Is there going to be an expectation for theme authors to register an consistently use a prefix for theme package names? Is that expected to tie-in with the themes website at all?

I just need to know what to say about that in the docs.

Re: Author prefixes and registration (themes and plugins)

Yes. Using the same system as the plugin prefixes is preferred. Register your prefix there then use it as a ‘brand’. Avoids clashes when there are two ‘photoblog’ themes created by different people, for example.

EDIT: Maybe that page should become Plugin and theme developer prefixes?

Re: Author prefixes and registration (themes and plugins)

In that vein, Bloke, should we start a page in the /themes region of user docs for registered theme author names?

They put in a ticket somewhere and it gets added to the list… first come first serve?

Ah, you beat me.

Yeah, that could work, makes sense. I guess I should look at that. ;)

Though, I would just rename it to ‘Author prefixes’. Less specificity is better than more in this direction. We’ll need to revise the page and associated linked pages too, for more generalizing context.

Issue has been started.

Re: Author prefixes and registration (themes and plugins)

I wonder if the plugin list, which has a lot of prefixes unlikely to ever see light of day again (probably half if not more), is locking out future theme authors who might want a similar ‘fix based on their initials or something?

I guess there’s no way to make that determination on a case-by-case though. Combined list it is, then.

That page is now revised/normalized to ‘author’ prefixes. No such thing as just developer prefix anymore. Page is re-titled and URL has changed: Author prefixes and registration

I suspect a fair number of the listed prefixes could be challenged. An audit warrants being made after the Plugins site is up and plugins are assessed for active circulation.

Re: Author prefixes and registration (themes and plugins)

Thanks for updating that. There are quite a few places it’s referenced throughout the docs so we’ll need to sniff those out and change the links.

Are you going to create a pro-forma issue template for prefix registration or do you want me to do it? Or are we not going to bother since it’s such a trivial/infrequent request?

I changed the ones I could find from within dev docs, and in the administrator docs. Not that many, actually. But certainly could have missed some.

Are you going to create a pro-forma…

That occured to me. I didn’t know I had the power. I doubt we’ll see many but it’s a good idea for channeling the person along. I’ll do it.
