Re: 'Surveillance Capitalism'

uMatrix addon for FF looks pretty interesting. Combined with the Nuclear Option for blocking FB and Goog, your web life might improve dramatically.

Trying this now. My first test, google.com, seems to be a fail.

I’m guessing this is what’s supposed to work…

#first, let's redirect English google.com to NOTHING AT ALL
0.0.0.0 google.com       #}
0.0.0.0 www.google.com   #}
0.0.0.0 google.ca        #} FUCK
0.0.0.0 www.google.ca    #} YOU
0.0.0.0 google.co.uk     #} GOOGLE
0.0.0.0 www.google.co.uk #}
0.0.0.0 google.ie        #}
0.0.0.0 www.google.ie    #}

I’m expecting a blank page, or something; anything other that what I’m seeing, which is a usable Google Search page. I don’t think that’s right.

Anyone tried this and know what’s up?

Re: 'Surveillance Capitalism'

Those YT videos in Colak’s post just above have disappeared, though. And I have those rules commented out, for the time being. Another unexpected result. Hmm.

The YT lines…

#Youtube
#127.0.0.1 youtube.com              #} you know the story
#127.0.0.1 www.youtube.com          #}

127.0.0.1 i0.ytimg.com #} mostly thumbnails, user pictures and
127.0.0.1 i1.ytimg.com #} other unnecessary graphic clutter. Feel
127.0.0.1 i2.ytimg.com #} free to leave blocked, as it also
127.0.0.1 i3.ytimg.com             #} improves YT's loading time considerably
127.0.0.1 i4.ytimg.com             #}
127.0.0.1 i5.ytimg.com             #}

#127.0.0.1 s0.2mdn.net #} comment out everything in this segment
#127.0.0.1 static.2mdn.net #} from this point down if you need to use
#127.0.0.1 www.youtube-nocookie.com #} YT, since these next few servers are its
#127.0.0.1 youtube-nocookie.com #} dependencies and can cause major
#127.0.0.1 youtube-noscript.com     #} functionality problems if blocked
#127.0.0.1 www.youtube-noscript.com #}
#127.0.0.1 s.ytimg.com              #} (s.ytimg.com is where the player is)

What I’m attempting at the moment is to have access to YT without the graphic clutter, as a test.

Test 2

Okay, this is odd. If I go to YT home page, I’m redirected to Insidio.us, and I don’t even have the uMatrix installed yet. Maybe that’s integrated in the Invidious plugin now and the rules for uMatrix aren’t necessary. Curious.

Yep, deactivating the plugin puts me back at YT. Nice!

Now, why am I seeing Google Search?

Re: 'Surveillance Capitalism'

Nah. That nuclear option via /etc/hosts file (mac) doesn’t seem to work for me at all. I’m able to go to all the sites it’s supposed to be blocking.

Removing that junk, I guess.

This project just emailed us to let us know they’ve included Textpattern in their catalogue – looks interesting (and they are fellow Brits)…

Did you clear the DNS caches / or / restart your Mac ? It won’t “work” otherwise. The host file is only read at start-up time, the entries are then cached and that is it.

Re: 'Surveillance Capitalism'

Colak would it possible to change that post with YT videos to just links to the vids instead of embedding the whole sh*t ? Thank you.

I did flush the caches, which usually works when I edit the hosts file. This seems to be the suggested command for newer macOS:

dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

But I did not try restarting the Mac. :{

Maybe I’ll give it another try when the mood strikes.

Re: 'Surveillance Capitalism'

I’ve had the nuclear option in my etc/hosts on linux since the day you posted it, Destry, and I got blank pages trying to connect to anything google or youtube. I changed FF default search engine and also now installed the FF invidio.us plugin, and it all seems to work well now. So worth trying again. Interestingly, I can still go to Google My Business although I can’t see the sites on Google search results, cos I can’t use Google search.

Notice I’m back using Firefox. Fed up of exploring other options which always seem to disappoint.
