Dark/Light Mode in 4.8-dev Hive admin theme

Latest Textpattern 4.8-dev on GitHub has user selectable Dark/Light Mode for the Hive admin theme, for your testing.

A few CSS glitches still to be fixed and Hive Neutral needs some work to support this properly but feel free to test it out in your environments. If we release a Textpattern 4.7.4 build (under discussion) then this could easily be back-ported to be included in that release.

Cool! Just had a look on Pete’s 4.8 demo site (thanks again Pete!). Spent ages looking for the prefs setting to switch to dark mode before I eventually discovered the light switch ;-)

That is lovely. My new best friend for evening work alongside f.lux.

Nice work, Phil.

Yeah, the lightbulb is fairly subtle but I didn’t want to make it too intrusive. Basically the theme will adhere to your preferred OS light/dark setting (on supported platforms) unless you click the lightbulb to override it.

Re: Dark/Light Mode in 4.8-dev Hive admin theme

It seems to work reasonably well based on the active OS theme (macOS 10.14 + Safari).

But I’ll be a bit the contrarian, as usual. I don’t like much that light bulb icon that appears on every screen / page of the TXP admin. It is yet another thingie that clutters the UI. IMHO, that is something that belongs on the Admin subtab of the Preferences panel, together with the Admin Theme selector. Or do you expect that people are going to toggle between dark and light mode often, depending on which panel they are ? – oh, we’re on the Prefs panel, let’s switch to dark mode… ok, now we’re on the Write panel, let’s toggle to light mode … [repeat ad nauseam] … I don’t think so.

I guess that people might switch it on and off. During the day, one might prefer the light mode and from some point on, the dark one.

I like it but I’m not sure about the contrast between the dark greys and the blue of the links for those who may have accessibility issues or even just bad screens.

Yes but that was not my point. You don’t need to have that toggle on every screen/page/panel for that.

Yeah, I’ve only looked at it on my iMac with its quite powerful screen (wide gamut, display p3, very bright), not sure how well it will work on the old and tired MBP 13 (~2012) someone lend me.

I’ll check the contrast of the blue links against WCAG 2.0 later and add more contrast if it’s not giving a AAA score. Cheers for the feedback.

phiw13 & phil

For UI consideration: depending on what users are doing, keeping as this on every pages is a good choice, IMHO.

Note: working fine on PCs, too ;)

Re: Dark/Light Mode in 4.8-dev Hive admin theme

It has to stay on every page because it’s a JS widget not part of the Textpattern codebase. Again this is why I have made it as non-intrusive as possible.

The blue link contrast has now been adjusted to give a WCAG 2.0 AAA rating.
