Microsoft Edge moving to Chromium
Just in case this one was missed, the microsoft edge browser will soon be using the Chromium engine. Hopefully, this is the end of the box model browser wars.

Compatibility has been much better of late, but that will undoubtedly make things more predictable for developers. The decision has nevertheless given some cause for concern. The same author has since tried to balance his original article with a more optimistic outlook on the state of web browsers.

Indeed I very much agree with you that the google dominance is of concern but maybe this time, new browsers will crop up implementing web standards and hopefully leaving google’s surveillance capitalism behind.

That is a damn optimistic view…
I consider this move by Microsoft as one the worst things they’ve done in quite a while. Edge was / is a good rendering engine, now we are one (big) step closer to a monoculture.

Agreed, this is terrible news for the future of the web. I doubt if anyone else will bring a new browser rendering engine to mainstream now due to the huge complexities needed for an engine these days.
Long live Firefox! We need to support them as much as we can.

It’s the holiday spirit homing in! Give me a few days and I’ll get back to my normal paranoid, depressing state:)

Yes! (I thought about adding that to my post, but then – “of course“). On Windowsand Androidit should be the default browser, on macOS use either Safari or Firefox.

Not much to worry about, the google-fan-boyz-and-girlz pundits implied… Hmm…
Microsoft proves the critics right: We’re heading toward a Chrome-only Web (Peter Bright / ArsTechnica). Skype for web as an Edge/Chrome only web app. Even Opera is not allowed in.

Re: Microsoft Edge moving to Chromium
I use Vivaldi (which is based on Chromium) and it can be hit and miss with Microsoft services. Heck, every time I try to use MS Teams I get a error page saying I’m using an unsupported web browser.

Poor old Skype – such a great thing back in the early days of internet telephony.
