Vikings to start hosting
I may have found my next web host.
Vikings (Germany)
A maker of libre firm/software systems, is getting into the hosting business to. ‘The world’s first fully libre host provider’. Entirely green energy driven.
They’re offering a 15% discount now for early sign ups.
And there’s probably no excuse for me to not pick up one of their refurbished X200 ultraportable laptops too. At $199, it seems crazy not to for a first-time linux explorer.

I have to admit I am disappointed. Ever since I read Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon 18 years ago, I’ve hoped for an online host outside of a major nation-state. I assumed this would be in Greenland or Iceland, not ensconced with the EU.

I’d be just as happy with a real viking location too, but this looks like a good start on the firmware and energy front.
Maybe they’ll eventually build the eye of sauron, but nation states will still have access to it. I think ‘data haven’ is a contradiction in terms anymore. One would be a fool to think data anywhere is 100% untouchable.
