IP capture

My Textpattern blog was updated (I assume by my site host), and now I can’t capture vistor IPs like I could. Is this a thing or a bug?

Re: IP capture

It’s a thing.

I am not a lawyer.

There were (numerous, lengthy) discussions about the legality of gathering IP addresses in the pre- and post-GDPR era, and since visitor’s IP address(es) are considered personally identifying information, that would require a) opt-in permission from the visitor before they land on your site and b) a clear policy statement on what you intend to do with the data, how long you’d hold it for, aaaaaand so on, since visiting a page could gather that info.

Gathering that info without permission leaves you — as an individual or organisation — liable to all kinds of legal repercussions, should a visitor follow up with a lawyer person.

So, it was changed, per the release notes, mainly to reduce the attack surface/exposure of Textpattern operators. Comments no longer record IP addresses, either.

Want IP addresses? Get proper, outboarded web analytics with that capability. Just be careful and clear a) what you do with it and b) how you explain what you’re doing with it.

It’s a thing. Gets round European legislation that comes into force on Friday.

Edit: and Pete beat me to it by 30 seconds with a far better explanation.

Bit of role reversal here, Bloke – I’m usually the one-liner guy…

Re: IP capture

I mean, sure, you could roll back to your 4.6.2 backup…you’re not obliged to upgrade to 4.7.0…

Re: IP capture

It would be convenient to leave the ip log, but turn it off by default.
Who needs it, he will include himself.
