Potential EU ‘code filter’ laws effecting GitHub?

I don’t know if Txp qualifies as EU jurisdiction, but this does seem to be relevant to EU devlopers in general.

EU proposal on upload filters

That’s an argument for Brexit, I guess. ;)

Don’t even think about opening that box, Destry-san.

It is far beyond code I’m afraid. It is our civil liberties which are at stake. I’ve signed this letter a few days ago. Considering the spirit of this forum, I hope that more signutures will be collected.

If it is any consolation, Rhode Island is doing something just as stupid so it isn’t limited to the other side of the Atlantic.

According to the bill, to get the block removed, one would have to make a request in writing, present identification that proves they are over 18 years of age, fork over $20, and receive a “written warning regarding the potential danger of deactivating the digital blocking capability.” The bill is not clear about whether ISPs, retailers, or hardware manufacturers will collect the fee, but it says that the funds collected from fees will then submit it to the state who will use it to “fund the operations of the Council on Human Trafficking.” – The People Working on Rhode Island’s Porn-Blocking Bill Don’t Even Agree on What it Does

Apparently every device is supposed to be pre-loaded with the filter software. I would assume that reloading the OS on the device would allow you to bypass it – or running Linux in a VM – or buying a device in another state – or using Tor – or any of another thousand ways that we could probably come up with.

We seem to be in age where politicians know just enough to be dangerous but certainly no more.
