Re: Toast to Dean

hello all. == Destry email coming your way soon.

In the meantime that shot of Dean on the roof top was taken by Matt Mullenweg as stated. It was taken from a rooftop near a building that is owned by Bob Rennie in Chinatown that has an art gallery in it. That photo was probably taken much later than 2001. I believe It was taken after textdrive was formed

Bob Rennie Museum and it opened in 2009 Rennie’s private art museum opens in Chinatown’s oldest building so that photo of dean near that art work is post 2009, probably;y 2011.

The sign is by British artist Martin Creed

no it was the West End of Vancouver. In fact al the servers of TextDrive were named after the streets of his old neighbourhood. Penderell , Davie , Nelson , etc.

Interesting!!! Could melancholia be a driving force? Mine was Lincoln, is there such a street in that neighbourhood?

There is a Lincoln street in Vancouver, but nowhere near the West End. Could it have been called something else?

The West End

Streets of the West End

UPDATE: I recall that Textdrive did start to use servers named after authors and famous persons after Joyent took over : Spencer, Lincoln, Windsor, Girard etc

Re: Toast to Dean

I was asked to desist with reaching out to people from Dean’s past. Reasons given were bad timing, poorly-worded requests… All absolutely correct. I have abandoned my effort to look closer at Dean’s life. A lesson in etiquette learned.

To Dean! ??

Btw, the roof Dean is standing on in that picture by Mullenweg is at 71 East Pender Street. Maybe one of Mullenweg’s many apartments from WP riches?

Now that i look at that picture again it makes sense that the angle is from above and next door to the building with the sign. There are some nice condos in that building, so perhaps one of Dean’s friends lives there. Or Matt may have a condo there.

Re: Toast to Dean

It’s a shitty trophy that no one would want to win, but I guess this now makes me the longest standing txp user here.

Although my blog now runs on Perch, it only does so because of Dean showing me that something as ambitious as creating an entire CMS to fit your own vision was even possible.

He always had a user account on my site to be able to log in and see problems in those early days. I’ve migrated content over the years, and eventually moved away from txp. 15 (?) years later, Dean’s account still remains. And how could I ever delete it now.

I keep trying to pen something in remembrance, but I can’t help but imagine Dean’s critical eye on the writing so I never get anywhere. I’ll keep trying.

Re: Toast to Dean

RIP Dean, you helped me, many others and clearly you were a beautiful human being.

At LAST I’ve cheerfully donated to the core devs at #TXP. I only wish I were able to give more. Thanks to the devs and ALL fellow TXPers. -A
