I did eventually get hold of a 1541 floppy disk drive which felt like it was tech from outer space. Good times.

That was my high school graduation present. I later got a 1581 which allowed me to read/write PC Floppy Discs.

The .io domain usage is a conversarion we, as devs, need to have at some point soon. If we are to do it, it needs to be during the time when the textpattern.com domain is still viable so we can 301 redirect and not lose inbound link juice.

A question for someone with real SEO chops. Presuming one can do redirects off the old domain (and all its inside pages) for a long while, what does a domain name change do to SEO?

While I’d like to learn the SEO answer re above, it shouldn’t change the domain decision. Given the reality & history of acquiring the .com, textpattern.io is looking better and better.

That’s not me, but I can take an educated guess as much as the next web fool…

I don’t think the impact will be much beyond a short-term re-indexing period with search engines. And as long as these are in place, that period will indeed be short and perhaps even better ranking after the fact:

  1. The needed 301 redirects, of course.
  2. A site map file in root.
  3. All the metadata bits and bobs in head.
  4. Getting switched over to https immediately.
  5. Smart (standards-compliant) structure of content.
  6. Front-loading headers, nav strings and form legends, etc with key words first.

That pretty much covers it. There might be some other trivial SEO tweaks, but if you have that in place, the switch-over ranking should recover pretty well.

Sure, there will be a lot of broken links in old blogs and whatnot, but that will mostly impact the ranking of those sites, not Textpattern’s site. I think Google, in particular, has downplayed the value of link exchange anymore because it was so abused, so the inbound links aren’t what they used to be. It’s the quality outbound links that matter.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

The .io domain is now a more sexy name. Why not decide to use this io domain as main domain, and do a good redirect from .com to .io.

We are currently testing this possibility (starting with the forum) alongside a move to full HTTPS.
