Sort Value for Sections and Categories

When you’re in CONTENT/LINKS and add a link, there’s a field called “Sort Value” …

by default, the “Sort Value” is populated with the link’s “Title” but you can modify it – very useful if you want to customise or tweak the order of your links

it’d be great if Sections and Categories also had this field – that way, you could also customise output of Section or Category lists

I’ve suggested this to Team Textpattern, but no harm in adding it to this forum

I’m digging out this old thread because I would find it useful too to have a way to sort sections (and maybe categories), from the admin side without changing the code (and without changing the sections name of course…). Honestly, do you often use an alphabetical order for to sort your sections?

Thanks, that’s not ideal but I’ll try it with the patch for 4.6.
However, wouldn’t it be just more logical to add this feature into the core? In my mind it is as justified as it is for links, no?

From the txp:section_list tag:

sections=“section name(s)”
Comma-separated list of section names to include in the list, displayed in specified order (unless overridden by the sort attribute).
Default: unset (all sections).

The linksort is a hack to get round the fact there’s no public-side way to manage the link order beside using sort. It’s, frankly, horrible. Imagine if you had that ‘feature’ on 200 categories and had to click into each one to figure out or change what order they’d display!

I think a far more intuitive system would (uhh, somehow) be drag n’ drop ordering. But quite how we would realise that in the admin UI and integrate it with the tags in a consistent manner, I’m not sure.

Thanks Stef; of course, I know <txp:section_list sections="…" /> but I was thinking about theming and a way for end users to create and sort their own sections.
For now I can set a custom theme pref with rah_flat to fill the sections list but it is not really intuitive.

You are right, and that’s why I was mainly thinking about sections. I often use the alphabetical sort order for categories, but never for sections. Do you often have 200 sections?

It would be nice… Is it realistic/planned for 4.7?

I use it with the patch in a 4.6 beta 2 installation and it work’s with categories.
