Never done it before. Need a quick and reliable tutorial suggestion.

Re: Video compression for YouTube: How? What?
If you’re using Windows, there should be Movie Maker that can be used to compress them by selecting for what device/use you want the video to be saved. Same with Adobe Premiere (Elements), but that’s commercial software.

Re: Video compression for YouTube: How? What?
Sorry, should have clarified I’m on Mac and looking for a low-cost to free solution. Something to do a couple of videos once and be done.
Some other things I learned are good to have as a starting or end point are:
- 16:9 aspect ratio
- .mp4 format
- 1280×720p (to match aspect ratio)
Confirmations, correction, or additions on that?

Not sure if it is what you are looking for but mirovideoconverter.com is free, runs on Mac and is easy to use. Just drop the files and select an export option like “for iPad”, “ for ipod”…

YouTube will transcode to a certain extent, so don’t overthink it.
Handbrake will do what what you want – use the YouTube preset. Done.

I agree with gaekwad and use Handbrake for all my video transcribing.

Alternatively and if you use a mac, you could use the export to web function which can be found under the file menu.
