Medium – releases API and opens custom domains
Another interesting announcement yesterday from Medium, which, already being a pretty good writing experience with a decent presentation, has now released an API and opened up the custom domains offer.
Say what you will about Medium and putting your content on someone else’s server (but don’t we do that anyway unless it’s in your basement?) — indeed I’ve yet to post anything there and I’ve had an account since the start — but it is becoming a provocative offer, and especially for people who don’t want to fuck around with front-end design anymore. Medium may very well be the best example of a platform living up to the idea of “just write”.
I’m a big iA Writer user. Love it (despite the emphasis on Markdown), and I’ve learned they’re already planning an extension that will publish directly to Medium, thanks to the API release. I have to say, I’m very tempted to pick up a new domain, move it to Medium, and use iA Writer to just write and publish in one easy swoop. And it seems like it would be the easiest kind of web hosting to deal with.

Now, if only Txp had an API. ;)

The files link to google code, Shouldn’t they lead to github?

Has there ever been a single article written anywhere, of anyone actually making that work? If so, I’d be curious to know how.

Textpattern integrated this feature into core with v4.0.7. You just need to enable it in the Preferences.
A separate download is no longer required.

Yes, back in the noughts there was quite a hubbub about desktop blogging with XMLRPC clients like Zoundry or MarsEdit. Just google a bit, you will probably find something.
Interest has faded, though, and newer blogging platforms will probably reinvent this wheel. XML is so 2000, JSON is hip ;)

wet,
If I wanted to use iA Writer to post to Txp with your Markdown filter applied, is that technically possible with the aforementioned XMLRPC API? (I seriously have no clue about where I would even try to look.)

Depends on your definition of “technically possible” ;)
- No it is not: My plugin does not hook into XMLRPC so you will have to make do with the three core rendering options (None, nl2br, Textile). Currently there aren’t even any hooks in core to support third-party markup languages via text filters.
- Yes it is: Somebody has to add support for third-party text filters to Textpattern’s XMLRPC server. From that moment on, XMLRPC will accept any text markup you throw at it and render it into HTML via the text filter you set in preferences.
