Re: Summer 2015 fund raiser for Textpattern

Do we have any updates – money is sitting there doing nothing ;)

I’ll happily take a refund and re-donate at the end of the year since this is proving tricky.

Re: Summer 2015 fund raiser for Textpattern

Hi Pete, its simply that people donated to the project but we currently have nothing to spend it on.

So Stef, Phil and Robert should ideally come up with a plan for the funds which can be anything from domains (textpattern.io is the new project domain as far as I know) to the proposed foundation/community project. There are other proposals also, including paying for an OEM license for Redactor.

Oh, I totally get that – and I’m in favour – my point was if there’s no shopping list that’s been decided on after nearly 90 days, perhaps the better solution would be to refund the donations before the PayPal 90 day hammer drops.

There’s zero animosity or snark from my point of view, I promise – I can just see hundreds of bucks in a pot with nowhere to go right now, and so donations might be better refunded so they could be re-donated at the traditional year end thingydoo.

Thanks Pete! I think that’s really the point, we need a shopping list on behalf of the people who kindly donated to the project.

Re: Summer 2015 fund raiser for Textpattern

I’ll rattle a cage and start things off.

  • I propose to reimburse Phil for the purchase of textpattern.io and renew it for a further 5 years.

That’s fairly non-controversial and out-of-pocket expenses on his part (I assume).

Re: Summer 2015 fund raiser for Textpattern

If the team had a treasury box, as it were, the funds could be moved there for safe-keeping and project allocation later, without the 90-day pressure of having to decide what to do with it, and other potential PayPal brutalities. Not to mention relieving Jonathan. ;)

I would think such a box would be one of the necessary first steps in any foundation/org setup. PayPal has its uses, but it shouldn’t be the coffer.

Lacking a Foundation / entity – it seems the only thing the money can do is get directed at reimbursements. I’m hoping the Foundation / structure / entity can be a subject at the upcoming Oct 10 meeting. Something where folks could agree on something and then march forth.

Re: Summer 2015 fund raiser for Textpattern

Happening upon this great feedback from Kevin Potts again, and noticing what I replied thereafter (which I had forgotten):

Ebook sales are one thing (better than nothing), but I saw someone mention donations too, and that’s a perfectly good idea for “kickstarting” an ebook series. Donations to authors and editors to get them written, and then sales for added incentive to authors. Sounds like a good approach as far as the financial side of things go.

Maybe some of that money could go to someone (gaekwad? zero? michaelkpate? Jakob? MrDale? wet? lol) starting one of those ebooks to get the ball rolling. That’s an easier bite to chew than a full book. A foundation could be a while. Or perhaps even just setting up a Txp store where such things (among others) could be sold later.

Cockles and finger bones.

Re: Summer 2015 fund raiser for Textpattern

We’re not getting anywhere with the shopping list on this, and over 90 days have passed. My earlier proposal didn’t seem to strike any chords, so I’ll propose something different:

  • refund Pete’s donation to Pete so he can keep the Textpattern demo site (see sig) running for another year or more

Nothing personal, Jonathan — this is and was a great idea — but I’ll use the $$ I donated to pay for the server I run out of my own pocket. That gets the ball rolling, and doesn’t actually cost any money from anyone else, so everyone wins. Sound good?

Re: Summer 2015 fund raiser for Textpattern

Pete, was hoping you guys discussed the funding at your recent meeting?

I just double checked PayPal (its a new site) and found that refunds are only available for 60 days after payment.

Anyway no matter – your idea is a good one so I would suggest instead that I send over the same amount you paid from the pot to keep your demo site running. Its not a refund, its paying for the official Textpattern demo site. Good idea!

But – what about a Redactor OEM as another possible purchase for the project? Any legal entity is far off and can be the subject for another fund raising drive later.
