I’ve found Web Faction to be a very good web host, my sites have also had a 100% uptime in the last 2-3 months according to Pingdom.
Suggestions on how best to set up Textpattern on WebFaction? That is, what sort of ‘application’ should I create since there isn’t a predetermined app like there is for Wordpress or Drupal.

Re: Best Host hosting companies
their setup is a bit quirky. but once mastered it’s a piece of cake. You want to setup a new Application and then chose Static …once you chose this from the drop menu it shows that type will be using Static/CGi/PHP-5.6
read this to get a grasp: https://docs.webfaction.com/user-guide/
the first time i used webfaction i tried it on a domain that i had hanging around. Went through the whole process and then installed Txp which was easy

Re: Best Host hosting companies
I’d recommend giving GreenGeeks a look. That’s where I will go for my own website. Unlike WebFaction and DigitalOcean that are reputably solid hosts but developer-oriented, GreenGeeks is more “commoner” friendly. But more important to me, they are the only web host that I’m aware of that has a green energy model, and I can get behind that. They have a special right now of $3.95/month.
For those of us in Europe, they have a data center in the Netherlands too.

To clarify
Webfaction has UK and USA based servers.
I am not a techie so webfaction is very friendly for us non IT guys
There is an easy hack for jailing accounts if one needs it.
GreenGeeks looks interesting . Let us know how it goes if you end up with them. Also type of CP used.

Read the docs of Web faction and you see here the foundations are solid …
The support is very responsive and helpfull !!!
GreenGeeks looks as many and many hosting companies who give us unlimited space and unlimited traffic etc.
Install a Textpattern site for the first time : you must understand the WFaction philosophy (read the docs !) and next, it’s a pleasure .
When I get a problem on a server, they offer me to move my apps (sites) to a new server, and then all was OK.

anyone else receive this offer from WEBFACTION:
Meet our new SSD hosting plans
Over the past few months we’ve been hard at work preparing our next generation of hosting plans. We’ve selected high-performance, pure SSD servers and we’ve carefully crafted a robust and secure software setup based on CentOS 7. Today we’re excited to launch these new plans:
$10/mo, 100GB pure SSD storage, 1GB RAM, 1TB bandwidth, shared servers
how is this different from our present service?
is it all good to update to this new offering?

Re: Best Host hosting companies
I expect all customers received that. At first glance:
Current:- 8.50 $ /month for 512 MB RAM, 100 GB regular disk space + 600 GB bandwidth on CentOS6
- 10 US$ / month for 1 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD disk space + 1000 GB bandwidth on CentOS7
So primarily speed and capacity increases. I’m not sure what difference the Cent OS 6 vs. OS 7 makes.
You can check the USAGE tab on the Webfaction dashboard to see whether you nearing your limit, but if you’re not storing vast quantities of data online or running a high-load website, it looks like the benefits won’t make a lot of difference in normal use…

Re: Best Host hosting companies
The new OS will probably give you a newer PHP version.
I suspect you’ll benefit more from the increase in RAM than from the switch from spinning rust to SDD (although it is nice to have if you’re website generates lots of read/write actions).

Re: Best Host hosting companies
Since I moved to a new server, I never get the message “mysql query stopped …”
I asked an upgrade to the new server, to test. I see next week.

You mean you just switched servers, but are not on one of the new servers yet? Sounds like you had a busy neighbour on your shared server.
