[nope] Add a Contribute/Improve Textpattern CTA to the admin side

I’ve been throwing this around in my head for a while and I’d appreciate some additional brains to provide feedback.

On the grounds that Textpattern is open source and fuelled by the community (in whatever guise that takes), we’re missing a trick by not asking for help with improvements/enhancements from Textpattern users, whether they’re new or established. There’s no shame in asking for help, and I have zero doubt that there are many people who want to contribute but haven’t figured out how their best fit.

High level stuff:

  • CTA should be something visible, perhaps a tab or sub-tab, but not intrusive or obnoxious
  • can be toggled on/off via prefs to completely hide
  • should be about 5 different ways a person or organisation can assist, varied levels of commitment and difficulty
  • throw a donate link in, too
  • should provide some progress and/or updates on what’s happening with Textpattern, feedback is key to involvement

Is this worth looking into? Would it be useful?

I can understand the desire for this from a project support perspective, but I can also tell you “clients” will not want this “distraction” in the UI if they already paid lots of money for a custom website build. This is essentially in-app advertising.

This is also something I would not want to see in my own install and would have to hide every time.

But the designer can turn it off and will no doubt do so if not appropriate. Not sure how many sites there are where it would be apt though.

Nice idea for supporters of TXP, but not for clients ;)

Re: [nope] Add a Contribute/Improve Textpattern CTA to the admin side

I know it’s far from what you meant, Gaekwad, but for some reason I thought of your idea when I read a Guardian article (a short extract below):

Windows 10: Microsoft faces criticism over privacy

The European digital rights organisation (EDRi) sums up the company’s 45 pages of terms and conditions by saying: “Microsoft basically grants itself very broad rights to collect everything you do, say and write with and on your devices in order to sell more targeted advertising or to sell your data to third parties.”

In many ways, however, Windows 10 is merely moving closer towards what has become the new normal thanks to mobile operating systems. Both Siri and Google Now require access to the user’s personal information to personalise responses, while both Apple and Google offer developers the ability to deliver personalised ads to users based on information such as app installs.
