Firefox Developer Edition

I had heard about this new repackaging of Firefox last year, I finally had a chance to try it out this weekend.

First off, Firefox Developer Edition has a new look and feel, dark themes are in. I immediately fell in love upon first run, so I went over to Sync and brought over my Bookmarks, Passwords and History from my current profile, I’ve been using it as my daily driver ever since.

The current version is 40.0a2, it basically takes the place of the Aurora channel, a bit more stable than the nightly branch. I run a nightly build for testing, but it has it’s problems here and there, so far the Developer Edition hasn’t crashed on me, even after enabling Electrolysis.

This is my first 64bit build of Firefox, exciting times indeed.

Don’t get tempted by the blue “E”, if you want to live on the “Edge”, try Firefox Developer Edition.

I’m no Microsoft apologist, but IE isn’t anywhere near as bad as it used to be.

Spartan wasn’t bad, I’ll be trying Edge soon.

I’m waiting on Windows 10 to finish updating from build 10130 to 10158, it’s taken all day, I’m at 92%.

The kicker is that I fired up the laptop this morning when I learned that a new build was coming out, went to Windows Update, clicked on the details under the fb1_impressive Professional update, and it started downloading and installing. Didn’t give me a heads up, go save your work Bert, just in case we bork it.

July 29th, the day the Internet froze :)

Re: Firefox Developer Edition

An update on the Windows 10 Preview update, I finally got a sign on at 5:45 pm, the update started around 8:00 am.

As soon as I signed on, there was another update, this time it was Build 10159 replacing 10158.

Used Edge while the update processed, nice little browser.

I’ve yet to see what’s changed from 10130, the circle hangs at says 0% applying 10159 after a restart.

Re: Firefox Developer Edition

Final update, after Build 10159, my Windows 10 system became unresponsive.

Created a new user id and signed on with it, figuring the updates borked my old user folder.

Still many problems, screen going blank, the system freezing for no apparent reason.

This puppy is not ready for July 29th, I’m staying on Windows 7.

Wiped the partition off the laptop, booted into Debian “Jessie” :)

Re: Firefox Developer Edition

Firefox Developer Edition updated to 41.0a2 (2015-07-03).

All week I’ve been running with multi-process on, and I’ve reported no crashes. This version of Firefox feels different than the newly released Firefox 39.0. Maybe it’s the new dark skin, or that I’m now running a 64bit browser vs old 32bit sitting in the corner with no one to play with.

Adblock and multi-process don’t get along, hoping a new dev build from Wladimir fixes this

Firefox 41 will use less memory when running AdBlock Plus

Before I leave you, I know I said final update on Windows 10, but I didn’t want to leave the new OS with a tarnished reputation. It so happens that in my case, going from Build 10130 to 10158 to 10159 did not sit well with my testing laptop.

Yesterday I found a link to Windows 10 Build 10162 64bit and made a bootable USB key. Wiped the partition, started fresh, now we’re talking. My, you have such pretty wallpaper.

edit: link to the testing laptop changed, got a new laptop.

Re: Firefox Developer Edition

I know the title of this thread is about Firefox, but it’s kind of drifted towards Windows 10.

Anyway, Windows 10 10240, aka TH1, for Threshold 1, the code name for Windows 10, is on Windows Update. Supposedly it’s what will go to RTM on July 29th, and Microsoft is not releasing ISOs, they want us to test their new update mechanism, I heard it’s loosely based on apt-get ;)

Grabbing it now, sitting watching the Upgrading Windows screen with the big circle and a 1% in the middle.

I’m in geek heaven, I have Windows 7, Window 8.1, Windows 10 and a Debian Jessie virtual machine all running on my desk. I can get things done 4 times as fast, or be distracted 4 times as much.

Re: Firefox Developer Edition

Woohoo, I’m running Windows 10 Pro, no watermark to speak of.

I’m using the Edge browser, checking all my sites, this forum is looking great.
