Re: smilies/macros hack/plugin??
I must say sorry here. I just re-read my responses and they’re possibly a bit… harsh. The effects speaking to a lawyer on the phone, late at night will have…
My apologies to anyone I may have offended, or who thought me a twonk. The red mist was clouding my better judgement.
I’m a nice guy, really :)

Re: smilies/macros hack/plugin??
I love it! Ransoming plugins/hacks/etc away using the DropCash plugin that started this whole ransom business.
As for personal opinions, people have to eat and if the plugin is really high quality and useful, then why not kick in a few dollars for it? (like chrismc said, it’s 40$ or however spread around a whole bunch of people). The whole idea of not releasing a plugin, ever, because after a certain date the goal hasn’t been achieved is a little bogus (unless the time period is a year or so). The way I look at free software, and really free anything, is that you didn’t pay for it, so you can’t expect problems to be fixed, questions to answered, or similiar in a timely fashion. If it takes the developer 3 weeks to answer your question, then it does. If the developer drops off the face of the earth, then you’re screwed. Atleast you have everything to build off of.

Ransomware is a way to developers earn some cash for their work.

Re: smilies/macros hack/plugin??
My opinion is that if something is free, then it is free, otherwise it is not free. I hate it when people try to disguise things for something they are not. If you need money to eat, then sell the plugins/mods/hacks, just don’t pass it off as a righteous free thing. What happens to the poeple who donate, if the goal is not reached? Did they just waste money, or do they get a copy? If they get a copy before the $$ demands are met, what is to stop them from redistributing the “free” code? If there are any restrictions, then the code is no longer in the realm of free.
My personal view on paying for code is that if it’s free code that is good, i’ll donate a few bucks. If it’s commercial, i’ll evaluate and then purchase. But for ransomware, I’m just going to code the stuff myself if I truly need it, and then release it for free (as I’ve done with all of my plugins/hacks). This may piss off the ransomers, but such is life.

The Textpattern license prohibits commercial plugins. Because they link with GPL code, they must also be GPL.
Don’t confuse gratis with libre.

My take on this is here.

Re: smilies/macros hack/plugin??
Manfre, the sad truth of live is that if you’re asking people donate for free they hardly do so. I’ve seen bunches of people who want to earn some cash releasing free stuff and asking people to donate. Most of them finally come to idea that donateware havent earn them a cent.
If you want it release for free – thats ok and you’re welcome. If you want to earn some bucks – ransomware is a good alternative for authors to give stuff for free and get a reward for you work.

Re: smilies/macros hack/plugin??
I understand that people are not likely to donate, unless they are a generous person who has money. That doesn’t change the fact that ransomware is not free because it must be purchased. If ransomware was truly free, then regardless of the goal being reached it would be released. This is a licensing model used by other companys in the past. Id would be the best example. They sold quake for a while and earned a certain amount of money. After so many years and x dollars later, they made it free and gave away the source. Ransomware is basically the same thing, which as zem points out would violate GPL.
Personally, I would love to get something in return for the work I do, but I’m not seeking monetary compensation. A simple email thank you, or a post card. Both are simple signs of appreciation that anyone can afford. Even if I do not get an email, or a letter, it doesn’t mean that I will withdraw my plugin or not post it.

Re: smilies/macros hack/plugin??
We should get Dean Allen’s interpretation of the licensing terms and intentions here. Ransomware seems fine to me, especially when it comes to web development, which involves the customization of a service. The GPL means that once the service has been developed, it can be replicated for free. Ransomware answers the question of who’s going to develop the service in the first place, and why. The reason why I’m interested is that a ransomware forum or website for TxP could be a boon to textpattern development. Then people could commision plugins, throw in incentives to speed up development, and specify conditions that the plugin be released by a certain time.

You can check out my “testing” page (where I test all my themes/plugins first) here: http://www.pixelmeadow.com/testing
It’s not exactly an in-depth test though…
Method: you’ve summed up my thoughts on the matter quite well…
