Be smart, Yiannis, serve it a compressed blank page (but don’t forget to configure the viewport). Twitter rates even worse, clearly amateurish work.

Re: google woes

That’s funny but keep in mind – the question is, do you care how your site ranks on mobile? If you don’t, and Google probably doesn’t for that page, then don’t worry about it.

Also – I don’t know how people tend to get to that page but it probably doesn’t get outranked very often, even on mobile.

Re: google woes

I did a pagespeed insights on the pagespeed insights result of your initial pagespeed insights hoping Google would explode. It didn’t unfortunately.

Also, above the fold CSS is nonsense too. Don’t bother with it.

Re: google woes

I am actually learning all this on one of my sites. I am also checking it on yslow and www.whatsmyip.org/http-compression-test/. I guess Oleg’s solution is the best one. Just serve a non styled page with a viewport and that’s it. Who needs proper sites anyway.

But don’t forget: enough space between links! Something like foo

bar will probably be accepted by Bigbrother.

Beyond that, does anyone still use Google? I know I haven’t for quite a while.

More than 75% of US internet user searches and more than 62% globally, so yes they do.

There’s Baidu that takes a fair chance of the rest, but only relevant if you are targeting China.

Actually, Google has far more market share in Europe than the US.

Here’s How Dominant Google Is In Europe

Europeans Use Google Way, Way More Than Americans Do

While Bing and to a lesser extent DuckDuckGo have some success, they are mostly domestic.

Re: google woes

We’ve moved our company workflow to paid Google at Work accounts, with 6TB of mirrored backup on Google Drive – I like it. I would still let the tyres down on the Google Streetview car though.

Hi Michael. I guess google actually cares about nothing anyway:) Note that if you are outside the US we also get page redirects from google.com which lowers its own ranking even more.

Actually I got the redirects here in Florida.

Re: google woes

Mobile searches on Google have now surpassed desktop in 17 (presumably the tech-significant) countries, including the US. So, like I keep trying to tell clients who don’t grasp the need for mobile-compatible websites… yeah, mobile searching is important (to say nothing of readability, making transactions, etc).

What irritates me is that iOS Safari doesn’t allow you to use DuckDuck as an SE option. So my choices are Google, Bing, Yahoo. Death by sword, knife, or axe at that point.

Hi Destry, On ios8 DuckDuck is listed as an option so do put your axe away and update the system instead:)

Good news: it didn’t use to, but it does now on my 4S under “Settings > Safari > Search engine”. See also
