4.6-dev ready for using?

Hey,

I’m planing to set up a new blog and I’m facing the question whether taking the risk of starting with the dev-version. Will it break at some point or is it basically good to go?

Thanks!

Re: 4.6-dev ready for using?

Stuff might break. It’s usable, but it largely depends on your user base / intended use. Some of the admin panels (e.g. Prefs) aren’t very pretty right now and the whole admin side is undergoing a revamp. Plus, very few plugins are up-to-date with the changes because of its fluidity at present.

But if you’re the only user, you don’t mind the odd out-of-place admin widget or you’re not using very many admin-side plugins, it might be good for you. And we can always do with the beta testers: especially for the admin-layout-update branch.

Thanks. Are there any bigger advantages in the 4.6 branch for – let’s say – non-techie end users? I’m not planning to customize the blog a lot for now.

Phil will be able to answer that better from the UI perspective. The search is improved, the overall workflow is tighter. A few things have moved. But the biggest changes are behind the scenes right now. Just doing stuff better.

My understanding is that there’s a bunch more stuff to be implemented before it’s production-ready.

I will strongly +1 the idea of sticking to 4.5.x for now, especially since upgrades are typically very straightforward when the time comes.

Thanks for your answers. I guess I play safe then and go with the stable branch.

Re: 4.6-dev ready for using?

I’m using 4.6 on a production site, the master branch is stable enough to use. Don’t recommend using any other 4.6 branches right now though because they are unfinished work (though you can test them if you are curious).

Re: 4.6-dev ready for using?

I’ve just installed 4.6 for interest and was surprised to find the standard ten custom input fields. There have been some plans for a totally renewed custom field handling with radio buttons, selects etc. … or am I totally wrong (or just blind?) :-)

@David

It’s not been patched in to 4.6dev as yet.

Re: 4.6-dev ready for using?

Hey everyone,

how is the latest status of 4.6? Just gave it a test run and it looks very solid. According to Github, there are just some small issues to fix, right?

Can’t wait for a beta release :)

Re: 4.6-dev ready for using?

Right. Yes, just a handful of issues to mop up and it’ll be ready for a beta release. Although it’s later than our roadmap planned, some extra stuff has been rolled in, so the wait has been worth it.
