There is hope: Franz yesterday mentioned the possibility of anti-spam plugins in the next release of FluxBB, due circa next week.

Well, I’ve got a theme update to push out for the forum too, so that is good. I’ll investigate – although I thought plugins weren’t coming until FluxBB v2.0. Can you link to the post by Franz about this?

There’s no post, just a bit of private chat with him. I think he suffers personally under the same chore, if you take the spam volume at his own testbed forum as an indication.

Let’s see how it goes. Having the opportunity to add plugins does necessarily give us working code to combat spam.

Would this be it?

Re: When forum spam escapes into news feeds

Through a Rube-Goldbergish construction involving this forum’s feed, an instance of Tiny Tiny RSS and its “Republish feed items” feature, and Feedburner I am now moderating which forum posts appear in txpforum’s timeline.

This costs actually less effort than the previous method of deleting embarrassing tweets there. \o/

Re: When forum spam escapes into news feeds

The latest release of FluxBB (v1.5.8) includes a directory for adding anti-spam plugins – might be worth a look.

I’ve updated the repo to build 1.5.8, we just need to deploy the latest code from our repo at some point. Robert, let me now if/when is good timing for you.

That is much much better already. Thank you Robert!

Is it by any chance possible to hook into the Feedburner RSS feed that feeds the twitter account. I used an online twitter to rss service to get an rss feed from the twitter account, but it doesn’t make the links embedded in the tweet clickable so visiting from my feed reader first takes me to twitter and I can then click on the link to visit the forum. Or is there a better way to subscribe to @txpforum via RSS?

Franz suggested some add-ons which would prevent bot registrations but I feel that we do not have that kind of problem. So he thinks that we’d have to wait for (or convince someone to build) an Akismet add-on.

Robert, let me now if/when is good timing for you.

Go!

Re: When forum spam escapes into news feeds

OK, I’ve prepared the GitHub repo for next release – I’ll upgrade the forum this evening, after work.
