Re: textpattern used by mozilla dev

Sorry, I wasn’t talking about the content at all, just the columns.

OK, quick straw poll, which layout do you prefer, a single column as seen here, or a two column as seen here

I used to seeing and making two column layouts with the desktop on mind, but now that I’m logging a lot more mobile traffic to my sites, I would be inclined to go for the single column approach; in some respects having a site that looks similar on desktop and mobile is less of a culture shock when the other medium is used and might mitigate some of the ZOMG WHERE DID RITE COLUMN GO LOL comments.

So, +1 for single column.

Re: textpattern used by mozilla dev

The single column looks better. If changed, it could take a larger font size tho. I.e. increase/decrease it based on PPI and viewport size, so that there is about 80 characters on a line no matter what your screen is set to. You might then even remove any max-width limitations.

Re: textpattern used by mozilla dev

I prefer this mix:

1) Single column for the landing site, articles and many other back pages.
2 )double column for the About section

…. texted postive

I’m not sure I understand the problem with the two column display since it is responsive already. If I said +1 on a single column, does that mean I’d see a single column in a cinema-size display too?

Whatever the case, +1 for single column, because it just seems like the fundamental layout that all designs should start at.

AdBlock Plus uses it on some pages too, though the layout dates.

It’s great to see Wladimir staying with Textpattern on his private blog too.

Re: textpattern used by mozilla dev

That new theme is looking great, Phil.

I like the look of the single-column design better but I noticed on my own websites that single-column layouts seem to contribute to my bounce rate. I know things will look a bit more busy as a result, but on two of my sites I’m moving back to two-column for inner pages and maybe three columns for the default section.

My theory right now is that with a single column layout there’s no persistent view for other content from across the website, so it turns my website into more of a single-serving publishing house. With the single column, there aren’t many plainly-visible reasons for anybody to stick around after reading the top of my inverted pyramid and feeling ready to consume different stuff.

This may be why Facebook is currently at four columns :-P

Re: textpattern used by mozilla dev

My current thinking on this is to have single column overall which allows nested columns (which is effectively what I do in my own framework). This gives a few options to the user for their own designs.

Ah, that’s what I’m doing, too. Sounds great, thanks for all the updates Phil.
