In it’s current form txp 4.2.0 doesn’t work on media temple’s grid hosting.
I can’t think of any reason for that. What specifically is the problem?

Well it has to do with symbolic links and maybe the new .htacess file. I have had trouble with sym links before with a plug it but I found a fix for it. But there doesn’t seem to be a way to fix this. Here is the error of of a fresh install. Upgrading produced similar errors.

Re: Best Host hosting companies
Hello Kevin,
Intrigued by your problem, I just made a clean 4.2.0 installation on my Media Temple Grid account and didn’t encounter any problem. I didn’t upload the ‘new for 4.2.0’ sites directory and used the .htaccess file that came with the release.
I don’t suppose that helps much.

hmm.. I will try again from scratch.
Edited to say that this problem was my fault.
media temple is the best host for textpattern imo.

Re: Best Host hosting companies
For Deutsch speaking admins:
hosteurope.com / hosteurope.de works wonderfully simple with TXP (using anything from txp 4.0.7 to 4.4.1 yet).
The minimum working hosting package is WebPack-L.

1. It’s good value.
2. Like a VPS.
3. One click installs of Django, Drupal, Zope etc…
4. Very diligent and clever people running it.
And how does one install Textpattern on WebFaction?? after uploading the textpattern directory all it does is download the index.php file rather than install TxP.
So far not very impressed with their UI.. very confusing.
UPDATE. after a few hours i have managed to “grok” their system, TxP site installed.

Are their prices per domain or are we allowed multiple domains on this?

Multiple domains. I’ve got 33 domains on my WebFaction account at the moment, although roughly half of those are development sub-domains so not active live sites. I don’t think they impose a hard limit on the number of domains that you can host on an account, but you are limited by application memory available.
I really like them. I find the control panel, although a bit different to most, a refreshingly clean alternative to CPanel (which I admit I loathe). There’s quite a bit of power and flexibility available, including SSH access, cron jobs, etc.
Their documentation is well-written and covers most of what you need on a day-to-day basis and their support, when I’ve needed it, is quick and helpful.

Thanks Steve,as TXD is slowly and surely is driving us away, it is good to check out the alternatives.

No problem.
Another good host you might want to look at that doesn’t use CPanel is TSOHost. Their cloud hosting is good value and very fast. Their control panel is not quite as powerful as WebFaction’s, but their support is fast and responsive.
They are UK-based and are in the middle of building their own data centre so they will own all of their own infrastructure, which is not exactly common amongst web hosting companies, many of whom are effectively resellers of the services of other company’s hardware. To me that simplifies the supplier chain, which leads to more accountability and a better and faster resolution in the event of any problems.

I wonder why they don’t offer one-click installation of Textpattern?
in any event, now that i have sussed out the interface the services seems rock-solid

I am very comfortably ensconced on Textdrive and don’t feel like there is any attempt to force us out. I love their second-to-none CP : Webmin. And I think their future is bright.
But i am wanting to find an alternative as i have come to realize that I shouldn’t have all my eggs in one basket.

Although they’ve been OK with me, some friends haven’t been migrated and they had no response from their support. Also their paid section is yet to take off and their front page still says: Returning Summer 2013. Summer is over and we are steadily moving into winter. Unless they launch for paid customers, or Dean has become a billionaire, their months are measured… Just my bleak opinion. Having said that I am happy with their up times.
Re their CP I hardly use it as the sites seem to be working just fine:)

Just curious … those friends that haven’t been migrated were they on the old FreeBSD servers by any chance? I have no sympathy for those folks as we had been told to migrate over five years ago! ;-)
as for their website… i have been monitoring that for some time … esp. since Summer 2013 is definitely over, Wish they would update that message.
I take small comfort that TxD is not alone with Summer 2013 messages —- also these guys: http://arcustech.com/
