Textpattern's official websites - performance issue?
The various websites officially hosted by Textpattern: Textpattern.com, forum.textpattern.com, Textpattern.org, etc. have been consistently slow to load (for me) over the last couple of months. It’s not a general issue for me – it’s unique to the Textpattern sites.
I’m curious if anyone else has seen the same issue.

Not experiencing that problem myself. All load relatively quick for me, even over 3G connection.

Thanks Phil.
There’s got to be something wrong along the line in cyberspace. It’s consistent across domains and subdomains and time.
textpattern.com
forum.textpattern.com
textpattern.org
textpattern.net
txpmag.com
textgarden.org
txpbuilders.com also shows the same performance, though I’m uncertain whether it is on the same server, host, etc.
It’s probably been at least 3 months, maybe more, since I first noticed the change. I’ve been otherwise distracted for the past year, so my visits have been infrequent. At first I thought it was just a momentary thing. So it’s taken some time for me to realize it’s almost all the time.
It’s like they hang while loading. Since most every other website seems to load properly for me, it suggests that it’s a Textpattern related item. Just not sure what.

It may have coincided with the Joyent move. The sites used to be hosted in the US but now they’re in Europe so the propagation delays are a tad longer from Central Europe to you than they are to us here in the UK.
I’m pretty sure that Jonathan moved txpbuilders hosting to this part of the world now too, since the Joyent/Textdrive upheaval.

Re: Textpattern's official websites - performance issue?
Thanks Bloke.
I think I do recall it beginning right about a time when the sites were temporarily unavailable.
I’m going to show my ignorance. I’m familiar with propagation delays with domain name server updates, but am unfamiliar with propagation delays for day to day browsing. I’ll do some googling.
I put a stopwatch on it. Latency-wise, it looks like each page load takes approx. 20 seconds from the time the request is sent until the page begins to display in Safari 6.0.5. Every link, every page, every site. Only thing w/out delay is using the “back” button (which makes sense since the page is in the browser cache). I’m in the Eastern US, running on a 3-5Mbs dedicated DSL connection.
Are there options to help speed things up given the new location of the servers?
Thanks

Re: Textpattern's official websites - performance issue?
They load perfectly fine for me too. So, traceroute:
$ traceroute textpattern.com
And ping:
$ ping textpattern.com
For me the textpattern.com high-five takes about 49 ms. Receiving the homepage takes 850 ms total, from which about 550 ms is spent waiting the server and Textpattern to do its thing (rest time credit of course goes to output buffering). The page and all assets take total of 6 seconds to download (includes 3rd-party content and async post-DOMready traffic).

Re: Textpattern's official websites - performance issue?
Thanks Jukka.
When it comes to interpreting Traceroute and Pings, I was never overly proficient, and have been away from it long enough to be extra rusty. I’ve included the Tracerout and Ping results in case anything stands out to anyone.
I tested with Google Chrome and have the same 20 second latency from request to load as with Safari. Which suggest it may not be a browser issue. Perhaps it’s not a terrible wait – it shows how spoiled we’ve become with broadband since the days of dial up internet. However, Textpattern is the slowest loading of any websites I use, even those hosted in Eurasian countries. Though in fairness, most of those are english language newsites and may be optimized for those of us farther West.
Thanks
Mike

Re: Textpattern's official websites - performance issue?
Look at your Chrome’s Developer Tools’ Network traffic and see what is taking so long to load. It’s not our end itself, since you are able to reach here in 144 ms, and the actual server itself would perform similarly for everyone.
Most likely some 3rd-party asset file is loading slowly, or timing out, or is not returning proper responses on error. For instance your IP could be banned from somewhere (and they are deciding to ignore the request instead of terminating it), you are hitting bad server (CDN, ads) or you can’t just reach the destination.
The forum consumes few 3rd-party dependencies; Google Analytics, Embed Tweet and Google Custom Search widget. On .com there bit more stuff.

Thanks Jukka. I thought the numbers didn’t look terrible, but wasn’t sure. I’ll check out your suggestions.

Re: Textpattern's official websites - performance issue?
It’s narrowed down some:
Textpattern.com
50 requests | 4.1 KB transferred | 25.99s (load: 25.99s, DOMContentLoaed: 20.63s)
Initial request: textpattern.com – 19.17 seconds
DNS Lookup 3 ms
Connecting: 19 seconds
Sending 0 ms
Waiting 168 ms
Receiving 1 ms
Obviously the issue is with the initial connecting. Now to figure out where/what the hold up making the connection is.
Thanks guys!

Re: Textpattern's official websites - performance issue?
Yes, I host txpbuilders.com and txptips.com on TextDrive II after Joyent booted us all out. I don’t see any latency over here in Hong Kong unless the local network is slow.
I think the TXP family of sites are still on Joyent?
