Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

So I visit my website this morning, and all the articles are GONE. Try to log in, and I get internal_error "Table 'txp.textpattern' doesn't exist". Log into Dreamhost web panel, and sure enough — the db is there, but the textpattern table is gone! Now here’s the crazy thing — another website on the same dreamhost account — which is running Wordpress — has exactly the same result: site shell showing up, but articles all apparently gone.

Any thoughts??

Re: Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

Is the table completely deleted or does it possibly have a prefix you don’t expect? What about all the other default TXP table’s prefixes?

Sure doesn’t seem like it…

Here’s what I’m seeing (the orange highlight is just from my text search):

Re: Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

Alesh, there seems to be no textpattern table there. Also what is the textpattern_category table? Was it created by a plugin?

Was the wp install under the same account?
Can you check the logs to see if anyone ‘broke in’?
Do you have a backup?

Re: Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

Oh crap, my response didn’t post before!

I think textpattern_category is something created by rss_suparchive or one of Rob Sable’s other plugins. Yes, the wp install is under the same account. Working on getting access to the logs or the backup…

I guess my question is, how could the textpattern table have gotten deleted? Is there any way it could happen from something done from the textpattern backend? Could someone have hacked my mySQL installation without access to the Dreamhost panel?

And the fact that the same exact thing happened to the Wordpress site — seems to indicate just malicious hacking? Or could it be something else?

I’m completely clueless—please help!

Re: Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

Hi Alesh,

To my knowledge, the only way one could delete the textpattern table through the txp interface is via the drop function of the rss_admin_db_manager plugin. It could also be that the wp install was hacked (easy task for many) and txp was just the collateral damage.

Re: Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

Wow, Dreamhost is being completely useless on this. No logs, no backups over three days, and the tech support guy I emailed last week (while it was within the three-day window) didn’t tell me I needed to do a restore ASAP.

Thumbs down for Dreamhost.

But so, I’m without recourse, eh?

Re: Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

Ok, one last question: is it possible that someone got my DB username/password out of config.php? Is there something I should double-check to make sure this file is not web-accessible? (Or am I being dumb, because my web host processes .php files before sending them out and the login info is stripped out?

Re: Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

Alesh, is this about the site in your profile? If you don’t have a single backup, you can always go to the Wayback Machine to retrieve (at least part of) your content.

Re: Textpattern mySQL table suddenly disappears?!

Thanks everybody.

Turns out I have one random backup from 2011. But between that, the wayback machine, and actually Google Cache, I’m slowly and painfully reconstructing everything.

Lesson learned!
