Outgoing connections via proxy server

I’m on the verge of making a client’s website live & their hosting company has just dropped a big spanner in the works – they don’t allow outgoing connections from their customer’s websites.

This affects:

  • updating the language files
  • help popups
  • connections to Flickr
  • and at least one other plugin that I can think of

Connections have to go via a proxy. This is the information they’re sent me:

In order to protect our web servers, we do not allow direct connections between customers websites and third party servers. In order to connect a website to an external server, please use the below proxy hostname in your websites code.

Host: proxy.private.netregistry.net
Port: 3128

Before I tell my client to change hosting companies, I’ll ask the question – is there any current facility in Textpattern to handle outgoing connections via proxy? I’ve had a hunt around but can’t find any mention of such a thing.

Re: Outgoing connections via proxy server

Hi Adi,

Even if there is a txp native way wouldn’t proxy connections slow the parsing of the pages anyway?

Yes, it would slow things down but these are outgoing connections which are affected – for example when the help links are clicked in Admin, a call is made to rpc.textpattern.com(?)

Incoming connections to the website (and Admin) are not affected.

Help links are connections from the client to rpc.textpattern.com not from the webserver.

Of course they are! Isn’t it funny how things conspire against you sometimes – there must’ve been another, unrelated, network problem at the time coz they’re working now.

Still no language update capability or access to Flickr though.
