[forum] Subscriptions not working for me

I’m probably the only one having this problem (I’m cursed), but thought I’d mention it anyway…

I don’t seem to get forum subscription notifications anymore. It’s been this way for a long while now and one reason I’m not too chatty here anymore. (Sorry if it seems I’m ignoring any questions directly at me. I probably just don’t seem them.) I have no idea why, and they are not going to spam or trash. I just don’t get any even if subscribed. It’s weird. Sometimes I’ve unsubscribed from posts I know I subscribed to.

On the plus side, I don’t have this problem anymore, which was a mystery for a long time that only went away when I updated to Mountain Lion.)

I recommend if you really want to get my attention, send me a note via the forum mail, or hit me up in G+ @destry wion

I’m subscribed to this post, so we’ll see what happens.

Re: [forum] Subscriptions not working for me

You’re not the only one Destry, I haven’t been getting forum subscription notifications for some time either.

I’ve been meaning to start a topic to ask if anyone else is getting them but never remember at an appropriate time, so I’ll add my voice to yours as you managed to raise the topic before I did!

Re: [forum] Subscriptions not working for me

So the email came through, but doesn’t always? That would sound like an issue on the server’s end. I got the notification too, but the email headers are bit, take a look;

There is a local domain name being used. Other than that the email looks ‘fine’. It has nice dedicated IP address too. Nothing that would outright block it outside of that domain.

Sometimes there are slow downs when posting on the forums. It could be that for some reason the sending times out, but that needs to be checked by someone that has access to the server. That is if there are logs being collected.

If there is widespread issues with the email server it would also affect all the four sites that are on the server.

Re: [forum] Subscriptions not working for me

For me it seems to be fixed: Today I got two mails after a pretty long break.
Let’s see if I’ll get some messages from this topic.

Re: [forum] Subscriptions not working for me

I got the mail at the exact time lazyadmin posted. But I’ve also never experienced subscription email problems before.

According to my observations, emails are sent more often as long as you’re logged in (and click links). As soon as you log out (which also happens automatically after ca. 10 min of inactivity) you’ll receive only one email per topic until you log in again (i.e. deliberately log in or click a link after being logged out automatically).

After a certain time of forum absence, this setup might give the impression of emails not being sent.

That seems to be a valid observation, I never log out and I always get the emails.

Uli, that must be a user (browser?) setting, I am never automatically logged out and I have lots of inactive time when I forget to close a tab.

Ditto.

I am never automatically logged out and I have lots of inactive time when I forget to close a tab.

And ditto again. Well, I do get logged out automatically if I log into another browser on another machine, but I still get one notification in my inbox per topic I’m subscribed to, whether I’m logged in at the time someone posts or not.

Can’t fathom why it works for some and not others. Is it a workflow thing? I’m old skool and don’t use any of this newfangled mobile junk that’s too slow for any serious coding, so maybe that has some bearing on it?

I wasn’t quite sure how to name it, so I simply called it “log out”. I actually meant the state when your name is listed on the front page of the forum (wich is the case when you’re logged in and are assumed to be “active”). In this “state” you receive each and every forum notification for active topics.
As soon as you’re inactive for 10 min you’re kinda “logged out” for the forum emailer and you’ll only receive one email until you get active again. Quite complex mechanism, quite hard to depict.

I’d put money on server side spam prevention – Gmail auto spam etc
