Re: Advice on fixing a site after changing hosts...

If I remember correctly .zip was not accepted and I had to re-export in .gz. My memory might be failing me though.

Re: Advice on fixing a site after changing hosts...

OK…hang on. I’m about to have to launch another research effort. I didn’t know that I had to make more DNS changes. I’m going to have to learn what Coda is/means/does. Clearly, I haven’t been removing anything called “domains,” or using something called rsync. So, those are probably the reasons for the failures of past efforts. I’ll use today to learn those new terms and get back to the actual work once I think I know how to do that stuff. I’ll also check on all the compression stuff and make sure I’ve got a copy in all the possible formats. I’m use to trying all the combinations/permutations of settings and choices until something happens to work. Then, I stop touching it. :-)

Re: Advice on fixing a site after changing hosts...

I’m really bogging down. I’ve been looking at this stuff almost nonstop for so long, that I can’t seem to grasp the advice. Is the Coda mentioned above something in Textpattern or something in Virtualmin at TextDrive. Sorry for the remedial work, but clearly, I’m not bright enough to be involved in all this stuff.

Thanks for any advice.

Coda is a Mac app for web development. It’s just a tool to transfer the files from Joyent to TextDrive. Any SFTP client can be used.

Similarly, rsync is a command line program to copy files remotely from one computer to another. If you are using a GUI SFTP program then forget about rsync and use the tools you know.

No point in needlessly complicating the whole process!

Thanks, Steve. I’ve been too close to this mess for too many days, now. If I’ve logged in and out of WinSCP & Virtualmin once, I’ve done it 5000 times the last few days. I’ll go back & delete everything and start over with those tools if they’re sufficient. Thanks…you probably saved me many hours today.

Re: Advice on fixing a site after changing hosts...

Maybe i am not understanding your issue. But the documentation on moving Textpattern from one server to another is pretty clear and easy to follow.

No doubt the work is clear and easy to follow, but not one of my attempts to follow that documentation – or the many other variations of how to do this – has moved the site and made it work. I’m quite certain I’m doing something wrong, but I don’t know where. I’ve gone back to TextDrive to try and confirm some things before making another run at the migration. I’m also attempting to do be very careful so that attempts to work in one area don’t undo some progress already made (e.g. DNS, email, static sites, users, etc.).

Re: Advice on fixing a site after changing hosts...

It seems that we have progress as I can see the txd page.

My suspicion is that your site was misbehaving as you (and your DNS) might have been in between servers. I would try migrating again.

Re: Advice on fixing a site after changing hosts...

Can anyone tell me where you find the following pieces of information which are requested when setting up Textpattern?
  • MySQL login
  • MySQL password
  • MySQL server
  • MySQL database

I’m on my fifteenth try for today and have not had any success. There has to be something obvious that I’m doing wrong. Thank you.

Re: Advice on fixing a site after changing hosts...

@6sigma it may have been due to the dns taking some time to propagate to show your new server. seems to be up now.

if you login to your Virtulamin, you should be able to find the username that is the admin for the DB

it will be of the form username-domain name e.g.. sigma-rodent
password is under the (show) link…just click the Show Link and a new window will popup showing the password along with your username

MySQL server is typical localhost

Databases are added via the Virtualmin interface. And once the DB is created you assign privileges to it by going to your users and adding them to the Database

Then in your config,php file in the Textpattern directory, on your server, which you can access via ftp, you can add the info:

EXAMPLE
<?php
$txpcfg[‘db’] = ‘username_database_txp’;
$txpcfg[‘user’] = ‘sigma-rodent’;
$txpcfg[‘pass’] = ‘imyY6KDDLoW’;
$txpcfg[‘host’] = ‘localhost’;
$txpcfg[‘table_prefix’] = ‘txp’;
$txpcfg[‘txpath’] = ‘/users/home/username/domains/rodent.com/web/public/textpattern’;
$txpcfg[‘dbcharset’] = ‘utf8’;
?>

Re: Advice on fixing a site after changing hosts...

Thanks for your help. I was looking in the right spots. No idea what combination of things made the errors stop.
