migrating an entire backed up db .sql to another blogging CMS
Greetings
For two years I have been happily using (as a guest user, not as a maintainer) the textpattern platform to write on a blog that was hosted on the website of an Italian science e-magazine. The blog was then transformed into an editorial tool, and the old posts were backed up on a .sql file which was given to me for re-use with permission.
I hope to restore the entire archive of my past posts, from the dumped .sql database, by importing it into another publishing platform. I have no capacity to install textile on a server, which may have probably solved the problem, therefore I’d be happy enough if I could start yet another blog, on a free platform, and import everything there.
I have tried with Wordpress, because I already use it for another blog, and a podcast, but I was unable to import anything there. I would not mind any other CMS that can do the jobs
Should you have any advice on the matter, I’d be grateful if you could share your tips.
Yours truly,
Massimo P.

Hi Massimo
I havent did such a job but i think that you must import the data into a db (teste DB not for live site using phpmyadmin) and there you can performe some sql to grab the title_html, body_html and any valuable column.
Cheers

Re: migrating an entire backed up db .sql to another blogging CMS
Hi Dragondz, yes of course that is an option, in fact I do have tried uploading in on a PhpMyAdmin installation and I could read the content of the tables, but I’d be happier to restore the entire structure, with comments and hyperlinks between the different posts. I understand that is a central problem though…
Thank you very much for your suggestion.

Hi Massimo
CMS’s normally just have import scripts very similar to the ones txp has to import from other systems. Your best bet would be to contact the developers of the new CMS and ask if there is such a script for the software.

Thank you Yiannis, yes that looks like a good idea. I just need to hunt for the CMS with the most collaborative developers now! I may try what Wordpress and Tumblr for start. If you have better suggestions I’d be happy go through those as well.
Ciao, Massimo

Hi Massimo, If you can install wordpress in your new server, then txp should also work.

Nope, I cannot install wordpress on a server, I am afraid.
I have tried importing the .sql dump db in a free installation of wordpress, on an existing blog (that is, not a wordpress installation controlled by me, but the free ones provided by wordpress.org) and it has not worked well. There were no errors reported at the end of the importing procedure, but there was also nothing imported at all 8-(
