Is /textpattern/setup required for updates/upgrades?

I’ve moved house to the land of slow broadband and I’m having to make changes to my workflow with a pitifully awful upload speed (about 0.2Mbps). When Textpattern upgrades come out, I tend to apply them sooner rather than later, though I’m not bleeding edge or SVN right now.

I currently operate a dozen simple sites and have chopped the following from the Textpattern file structure to save me some upload resource and time when I upgrade:

/files (already exists on the site)
/HISTORY.txt (just gives away my Textpattern version number, removed for security)
/images (already exists on the site)
/README.txt (just gives away my Textpattern version number, removed for security)
/rpc (I don’t use XML-RPC)
/sites (I don’t use multi-site)
/textpattern/theme/hive (I use Classic theme)
/textpattern/theme/remora (I use Classic theme)

My question: is /textpattern/setup currently used for version upgrades? I can’t see anything inside it that refers to upgrading, that all seems to live in /textpattern/update. Assuming not, this takes the amount of data I have to squeeze up the tubes from 33mb to 15mb, a saving of over 50%. Not a big deal for you people with fast broadband, but it’s good for me. I can squeeze a little more, I’m sure, but returns will likely be diminished.

Re: Is /textpattern/setup required for updates/upgrades?

I think I’ve answered my own question – removing /textpattern/setup from the local file tree, then uploading and replacing the whole of /textpattern has worked fine with a bump from v4.5.0 to v4.5.2, which is encouraging.
