Interestingly enough they did get parsed but the posted message said “was posted a few seconds ago” even though I used the code in an old install with much older posts.

We wrote this in our 4.5.0 release announcement:

Textpattern 4.5.0 fixes … security vulnerabilities. An update is highly recommended.

To state the obvious: By “highly recommended” we definitely wanted to express that 4.5.0 does indeed fix security issues which might be the target of an exploit.
