Importing a Wordpress XML file
Hi,
I’ve been experimenting with Textpattern and am really loving it and so have decided to take the plunge and move all my Wordpress blog posts over to Textpattern. However, I’m having a bit of trouble.
Is there a way to import a Wordpress-exported XML file? If so, could someone please point me in the right direction.

If not, could someone help me with the Textpattern importer. I can’t seem to find the Wordpress database details required for the import. My blog is currently hosted by Wordpress.com so I never had to set up a database on my own hosting. Does anyone know where I can find the
1. Database name
2. Mysql user
3. Mysql password
4. Mysql host
As I said, my blog is hosted on wordpress.com so I never had to create a database myself.
I’ve searched the forums and also my Textpattern Solutions book, but to no avail. Any help would really be appreciated!
Thanks!

Re: Importing a Wordpress XML file
Unfortunately, the textpattern importer predates the Wordpress WXR format. It only imports directly from a live database.
There is a solution, though. You can do a temporary install of WordPress, import the wxr file, and then import from that database into Textpattern. A bit convoluted, but it will work.

Thanks Michael! That makes sense – I’ll give it a go and post my results.

Re: Importing a Wordpress XML file
Hi,
I used Michael’s suggestion and it worked perfectly.
I exported a WXR file from my Wordpress.com hosted blog. Then, using MAMP, I created a database on my computer, did a temporary install of Wordpress and imported my WXR file. From there I used Textpattern’s importer to grab everything from there.
Hope that helps anyone who has a similar problem.
Thanks Michael!

Trying the same thing, but getting nowhere.
I have WordPress installed under MAMP. But when I try to import from Textpattern on my remote server (not MAMP) I get an error about not being able to login as root, pw root.
Could anyone share the settings for each of the fields in the WordPress import?
Or should I install Textpattern under MAMP and try locally?
All help gratefully received.
Thanks
Jeremy
