[feedback] New Textpattern User - Enjoying It!
Hi all!
I am a musician, artist and baker living in California.
Recently I’ve been become fascinated by graphic design and new web technologies.
I’ve been looking for a CMS I can dig into, mostly for building my own sites and helping friends with their online presences.
- Is well-documented
- Has an active, supportive community
- Is focused more on stability/security than bleeding-edge features
- Doesn’t have endless layers of abstraction between the underlying code and UI
- Won’t put out HTML/style stuff unless I tell it to
Textpattern ticks all these boxes.
It’s exciting that the TXP mag has been revived, and it appears that TXP5 is forthcoming.
Also, the level of design quality I see in many TXP users’ sites is remarkable!
There’s something inspiring about signing into the admin panel and being persuaded to “Write” right away! While I had tried Markdown before I’m liking Textile even more! I’ve ordered the Textpattern Solutions book, and am eagerly awaiting its delivery.
I’ve tried a lot of CMSs, but Textpattern is the one I’m using the most. Some of the others I may continue to explore:- Symphony and ProcessWire – for their bare-metal, modular configurability
- SilverStripe…I’m interested in a CMS to use on a Microsoft server/DB at my work
- SquareSpace…I am launching a community gallery site for my school art program …I examined all the options and felt that a hosted, maintained system was best for this project.
Anyway, thanks to all who have made TXP what it is so far, I’m looking forward to contributing!

That (and the excellent tag system) is probably Textpattern’s strongest feature.

Thanks for your well-founded positive view from outside. Sometimes I think I’m just too little flexible for trying out other CMSs (TXP was my second one, and I instantly had a crush on it), but you’ve ironed out these creases in my self-assurance ;)
In bad weather I never leave home without wet_plugout, smd_where_used and adi_form_links

My Textpattern Solutions book arrived this morning, looks like it will be a great reference.
It’s already gotten some wheels spinning in my head.

Apropos of reference: Textpattern’s concept hasn’t much changed since the book has been published, but the Textpattern tags have! And there are many very useful new ones (e.g. variable/if_variable) you won’t find in the book, plus you can now use tags as values of TXP attributes (often mentioned as “tags in tags”) and nest conditional tags in arbitrary depth.
Apropos of what? Ah, reference: I recommend bookmarking the TXP tag reference and have a short read of how to use apostrophes when using TXP tags as values of TXP attributes (see code example 2).
