Alternate sorting order for "next" and "prev" titles and links?

The tags, txp:next_title, txp:link_to_next, txp:prev_title, and txp:link_to_prev refer to an article’s place in the chronological sequence of publication dates. Unlike some other tags, these offer no way to specify an alternate sort order.

If there is a Textpattern tag, or a plugin, that provides a way to refer to the title or URL of a “next” or “prev” article with respect to any other sorting order, I would be very interested to know about it.
