Regarding .com’s nav, can we also drop the verbiage too. “Learn from the Docs”? “Check the Weblog”? Seriously?
Simple, clear, single words that the world knows… like the wiki’s nav demonstrates.
The rest is just in the way.

The extra lipsum descriptions are in the nav likely to make it look more balanced, while still keeping it clean as empty canvas. Otherwise the nav would look very plain and unbalanced in the current form. In my opinion it would need some redesigning if the words were dropped.
Worst things in whole .com layout are the ads (can’t be helped I assume) and some mixed colors (slightly different colored body texts, one #333 and some other shade), mixed fonts, off-balanced cramped “size and more info” under the download button, and all the italic text. Italic serif fonts are not exactly the easiest to read. At the testimonials size rendering starts to become pretty jittery.

I’ll look into all this (probably Sunday) and fix any balancing issues and inconsistencies I find in the CSS. I can’t change the nav wording though since I don’t have any access to the CMS.

Unbalanced against what?
- FEATURES
- DOCS
- FORUM
- BLOG

To my eye, once you take out the noise words, it’s laterally balanced with the logotype. And they wouldn’t be insulting my intelligence. It’s like ‘Hi, this is a Kleenex. You use it to blow your nose. And this is a cup…you put coffee in it.” Etc.
You do not use meaningless text in IA for aesthetics (e.g., balance). Ever! You can make text beautiful (e.g., typography), but that’s not the same thing.

Yes, it does need some redesign. Not a major overhaul, but some gradual tweaks. Design should be changed in parallel with content, as needed…subtly, transparently. Major redesigns every 5 years to pull the site out of the weeds is the wrong way to do it.

Ads can be nice (and rewarding) if done right. This is another example of a content type not taken into account before the design. Nobody’s fault. Just sayin’ … and another example of the design needing some shifting in relation to content changes.

Agree with all that.
Also, all the instances of “Textpattern” in all-caps is a crime on the clarity of Textpattern’s brand name. Every instance of “TEXTPATTERN” should be changed to “Textpattern” (including logotype, which should go back to small-caps at the very least). I’ll spare you the theory here, but will cover later in an article, if miracles haven’t happened first.
